East Sussex: Trails, Coast and History
Accommodation in East Sussex
East Sussex offers travel ideas with a wide range of character: circular routes through open and wooded landscapes, a paved trail along a former railway line, stretches of coastline and historic sites. You can choose the focus of your stay based on the experiences that interest you. Seven Sisters Country Park lies within the Seven Sisters National Nature Reserve. Cuckmere Haven is a special place for nature, wildlife and plants.
Trails, Woodlands and Coastal Landscapes
In Ashdown Forest, a 14-mile circular route leads to the distinctive Scots Pine Clumps. The landscape offers wide open spaces, far-reaching views and quiet wooded areas. The forest also has a literary connection: Ashdown Forest inspired the adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh. The circular route therefore combines a specific walking destination with landscape views that differ from those along paved trails.
The Cuckoo Trail is also 14 miles long, but follows a different route: it runs along the former Cuckoo Line railway from Heathfield to Shinewater Park, passing through Horam, Hailsham and Polegate. The trail crosses the Sussex countryside. Its wildlife-rich verges, wooded stretches, views and numerous resting places give the route its own character.
The Cuckoo Trail is paved throughout and has gentle gradients. This makes it suitable for all user groups in all weather conditions. Local conditions can change temporarily, so check them before setting out. Comparing it with the Ashdown Forest circular route can help with planning: both trails are the same length, but differ considerably as a circular route and a former railway line.
A section of the South Downs Way follows the River Cuckmere, passes Friston Forest, Seven Sisters Country Park and the coastal village of Birling Gap, climbs Beachy Head and then descends to Eastbourne. The public can go canoeing or stand-up paddleboarding on the meanders in Seven Sisters Country Park. Launching and landing are permitted only at the designated slipway at the South Car Park. Check the water access rules before your visit.
Historic Places and Museums
Bodiam Castle is a 14th-century ancient monument. Its defining features include spiral staircases, battlements and a drawbridge; visitors can climb the stone towers. The surrounding landscape includes wetlands, grassland, and habitats with old trees and deadwood. This means architecture and a variety of landscape features sit side by side at the same named site.
Battle Abbey was founded around 1070 by William the Conqueror as a Benedictine foundation, in commemoration of his victory over the English at the Battle of 1066. An audio guide lets you follow the full course of the Battle of Hastings; check its availability before travelling. The gatehouse also houses an exhibition about the abbey’s history in the years after 1066. Exhibition details may change.
In medieval Rye, the Rye Museum Association runs two accredited museums: one on East Street and one at Ypres Tower. They are just a short walk from each other. Hastings Museum and Art Gallery has galleries covering the region’s history, from prehistory and the Saxons through 1066 to the present day. Bluebell Railway offers a different focus: the volunteer-run railway was the first preserved standard-gauge passenger railway in the United Kingdom and offers interactive exhibitions on the history and science of the Industrial Age.
Wine and Planning Your Stay
Wine tastings and walks through vineyards are also among the experiences available. Hidden Spring Vineyard in East Sussex offers a tour showing the journey from grape to wine, ending with an expert-led wine tasting. At Bluebell Vineyard Estate, you can choose a tour or a wine-and-cheese tasting with advance booking; there are also three self-guided trails through the vineyards and woodland. The options therefore differ in whether a guided tour with tasting or a self-guided trail is the main focus. Booking arrangements may change; check the details before your visit.
When you arrive in Seaford, you can use an integrated travel map to explore the town and the South Downs National Park, including Seven Sisters Country Park. Southern works with local bus companies and offers connecting services to Sheffield Park, making this destination accessible by public transport. Check connections before travelling. When choosing where to stay, it helps to first decide which experiences you want to combine and consider the transport links that suit each one.
