Marlow lies on a beautiful stretch of the Thames, surrounded by the countryside of the Chiltern Hills. When planning your stay, the river, local history and walking trails offer different points of interest: the suspension bridge and town museum provide different perspectives on the area’s history, while Higginson Park and the waterside paths make for a more outdoors-focused visit.

Bridge, Architecture and Local History

Marlow Bridge is a suspension bridge built by William Tierney Clark between 1831 and 1836. It crosses the Thames between Marlow in Buckinghamshire and Bisham in Windsor and Maidenhead. Marlow’s historic character is also reflected in its Georgian and Victorian architecture; the bridge provides a tangible connection to the town’s building history.

Another way to explore the town’s history is to visit Marlow Museum. Its permanent exhibition focuses on the history of lacemaking in Marlow. Engaging exhibits, interactive displays and family-friendly activities complement its coverage of local history. Here, you can explore both a clearly defined craft theme and the broader history of Marlow.

Higginson Park and Riverside Paths

Higginson Park is Marlow’s main public green space and covers approximately 23 acres. The Thames Path walking trail can be accessed from the park. Marlow also has quiet paths for walks along the riverbank. This gives you a choice of options: the park as a designated green space, the Thames Path as a walking trail, and peaceful riverside walks.

The park is also a useful reference point for getting around: Marlow railway station is a five-minute walk away. Buses and trains run from High Wycombe, Maidenhead and Reading to Marlow town centre. If you’re planning your journey, check the relevant timetables for your travel date.

Excursions and Activities

The Midsomer Murders Trail from Marlow is 17 miles long and visits filming locations used in the television series Midsomer Murders. Another destination is Marlow Lock and Weir: a footpath of approximately half a mile leads there from the main gate at St Peter’s Church. When comparing the distances, note what each one refers to: the 17 miles is the length of the trail from Marlow, while approximately half a mile is the footpath from the main gate mentioned to the lock and weir.

The Longridge Activity Centre is located on the banks of the Thames near Marlow. Activities offered there include kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding and climbing. This adds a dedicated range of activities to the riverside paths.

Market Dates in Marlow

Marlow Market is a craft, food and handmade goods market. It takes place on the first and third Saturday of every month from 10 am to 3 pm; in January, it is open only on the third Saturday. If you’re planning to visit the market, check that the date falls within your stay before travelling.
