Wendover combines walking and cycling routes with a market, a church and distinctive local landmarks. The Ridgeway National Trail runs through Wendover; the Chilterns Country Views of the Vale Walks start in the centre and lead through ancient beech woods, past bluebells and wildflowers. The Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal also runs through the town. When looking for hotels in Wendover, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: walking, cycling, nature watching or a visit to the town centre each call for different approaches to planning your days.

Compare walking trails by distance and destination

The Coombe Hill Walk is a 3.5-mile circular route. A monument at the summit commemorates the men from Buckinghamshire who fell in the Boer War. The 7-mile circular route to Wendover Woods is twice as long and partly follows the Ridgeway National Trail. The two walks therefore offer different scales: a shorter circular route with a memorial at the summit and a longer route to Wendover Woods that includes a section of the Ridgeway.

The Wendover Cycle Loop adds a cycling route to the mix. This 14-mile circular route starts and ends in Wendover. Sorting the options by activity and stated distance makes it easy to distinguish between two circular walks of 3.5 and 7 miles and a 14-mile cycling loop.

Woodland and nature along the canal

The Chilterns Country Views of the Vale Walks lead through ancient beech woods and past bluebells and wildflowers. This is a different kind of landscape from the Wendover Arm Canal: along its towpath, the canal provides a habitat for resident and migratory birds, aquatic wildlife and wildflowers. By the water, both the habitat along the path and the plant life are in view.

Extensive work has been carried out on the Wendover Arm Canal to make it accessible to everyone. When planning your stay, these two aspects may appeal to different interests: the woodland and flowers along the walks, or the wildlife and plant life along the towpath.

Clock Tower, market and church

Wendover’s Clock Tower began life in 1842 as a small market hall. Today, it stands against the backdrop of the Chiltern Hills. Its history and the view of the tower give a visit to the town centre a distinctive cultural focal point.

The Wendover Local Produce Market is held on the third Saturday of each month from 10 am to 2 pm at the Manor Waste. It offers handmade crafts as well as freshly prepared food and drinks. As market dates can change, it is best to check the date before you arrive. St Mary's Church is open to visitors daily from 9 am to 6 pm; check these opening times again before your visit, too.

Playground and fitness trail

The Hampden Meadow Playpark and Fitness Trail features a securely fenced playground with equipment for children up to 12 years old, as well as a fitness trail. The age guidance applies to the play equipment; the fitness trail is an additional facility at the same named location. You can therefore include this stop in your plans alongside walks, the cycling route and the town centre.
