Sandtoft: Trolleybuses, Narrow-Gauge Railway and Airfield History
Accommodation in Sandtoft
Sandtoft offers several reasons to stay: the Sandtoft & District Railway, trolleybus experiences, several museum themes and the history of Sandtoft Airfield. When planning, it helps to keep the different visitor attractions and the day of the week in mind.
Narrow-Gauge Railway and Trolleybus Experiences
The Sandtoft & District Railway is a 7.25-inch narrow-gauge railway. Its track runs from Central Station behind the main depot building to the north-west corner of the museum grounds. The line is being developed and extended as resources allow. The fleet includes three locomotives, three passenger cars and eight goods or work wagons. Its composition may change as the railway develops.
On opening days, visitors can ride a selection of restored trolleybuses. Whether a ride is available depends on the opening day and the vehicle available. The Trolleybus Driving Experience offers a different kind of experience: under the guidance of an experienced instructor, participants learn to manoeuvre a 26-foot-long trolleybus around the museum’s circuit. As of 1 September 2026, bookings were available for 2027. As availability changes, check the latest dates and available places for your trip.
Museums and Local History
The Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft was founded in Sandtoft on a site originally measuring four acres. The history of Sandtoft Airfield dates back to 1944, when the airfield served as an RAF base for Halifax and Lancaster bombers. This brings together a museum with its own founding story and the airfield’s former use as distinct historical themes.
The Toy and Model Museum displays a selection of items made over approximately the past 100 years; the selection on display may change. The Cycle Shop Museum recreates the atmosphere of a traditional bicycle shop, adding a different focus to the museum themes. Sandtoft Hall also has a historical connection: its origins date back to the early to mid-18th century.
The Happy Cafe is also located at Sandtoft Airfield, a family-friendly café and bar serving homemade food and waffles. Details of the food on offer may change. If your visit depends on it, ask about the current menu.
Getting There and Planning Your Hotel
As of 1 September 2026, Connect2 North Lincolnshire is the only public bus service to the village of Sandtoft. It runs Monday to Saturday, but not on Sundays. Check the latest timetable before travelling and choose a day of the week that works for your visit.
If you mainly want to travel by bus, decide on the day of the week first. If the Trolleybus Driving Experience is important to you, check in advance for an available date; rides on restored trolleybuses depend on the opening day and vehicle availability.
