Messingham brings together several distinct themes for planning your stay: a fishery with eight lakes, a nature reserve with birdwatching opportunities, a zoo and the Church of the Holy Trinity. This lets you consider nature, animals and architectural history as separate focuses for your stay.

Lakes and Fishery

Messingham Sands Fishery covers 56 acres and has eight lakes. The number of lakes and the area give two different measures: how many bodies of water the site includes and how large the site is overall. If you are interested in a fishery with several lakes, you can distinguish this focus from nature watching and church architecture. The layout of the site may change over time; if the current number of lakes is important for your plans, check the situation before your visit.

Architectural History of the Church of the Holy Trinity

The nave arcades of the Church of the Holy Trinity date from the 13th century. Most of the rest of the church was rebuilt in 1818–1821. The dates therefore refer to different parts: the 13th century applies to the arcades, while 1818 to 1821 refers to the extensive rebuilding of the rest. Those interested in architectural history can see a medieval building element alongside a much later phase of construction. The church cannot therefore be assigned to just one period.

Birdwatching at the Nature Reserve

At Messingham Sand Quarry Nature Reserve, a regularly mown circular path includes two bird hides. Almost 200 bird species have been recorded in the reserve; the number may change as new surveys are carried out. The circular path, hides and species count offer different points of reference for birdwatching: the first two describe facilities on site, while the last indicates the range of species recorded. The path’s maintenance may change. If you are planning to use it, check its current condition before your visit.

Messingham Zoo and Its Offerings

Messingham Zoo focuses on close encounters with smaller, friendlier animals. Its offerings include interactive exhibits and feeding sessions. It also has tailored programmes for school groups, families, and people interested in nature and wildlife. These different focuses help you treat the zoo as an activity in its own right alongside fishing and birdwatching. Activities and programmes may change; if a particular exhibit, feeding session or group programme is important to your plans, check the current offering in advance.

Finding Your Way Around the Messingham Walk

The Messingham Walk begins at Memorial Field Sports Ground on Northfield Road. The starting point provides a reference and may change, so check it again before setting out. Compared with the circular path in the nature reserve, the planning information here focuses on the walk’s starting point, while in the reserve the circular path, bird hides and recorded bird species are the main features. This lets you distinguish between the two route options according to whether you would rather orient yourself by the starting point or by birdwatching.
