Sundhausen: Village Green and Community Life

The village green gives Sundhausen a clear local focal point: the large, grass-covered area lies in the centre, with lime trees and chestnut trees standing alternately around it. Both the green space and the alternating tree species shape the look of the village centre.

Sundhausen’s community events calendar includes a Pentecost festival with the raising of the maypole, a traditional Easter bonfire and a Christmas market. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the relevant dates in advance.

Nature and Visitor Information in the Wider Unstrut-Hainich Destination

The Unstrut-Hainich district is part of the Wartburg Hainich World Heritage Region. In the wider Unstrut-Hainich destination, the treetop walk offers different perspectives on the Hainich: walk along the path 24 metres above the Hainich canopy; from the treehouse, the view extends across Hainich National Park. Those who are comfortable with heights can climb the associated tree tower to a platform 40 metres high. From there, the view extends across the Hainich to the Thuringian Basin. The path and tower platform thus offer viewpoints at different heights. Check the current operating conditions of the treetop walk before your visit.

The Betteleichenweg in the national park offers a different connection between landscape and cultural history: it passes numerous cultural and historical highlights, including the Ihlefelder Kreuz, the Eiserne Hand and Ihlefeld. In spring, it runs through flowering stands of wild garlic and larkspur. Here, the seasonal landscape sits alongside the route’s historical landmarks.

The treetop walk begins 200 metres from the Thiemsburg National Park Centre. A large hiking car park, a dining establishment, toilets and a public transport bus stop are located at the centre. Before travelling, check whether these facilities are currently available. The National Park Centre’s exhibition presents its content through films, large-format image walls, activity stations and interactive features. The centre also offers a fully accessible media guide; tablets and headphones are available to borrow. The regional offering therefore brings together an exhibition with a range of ways to explore its content and experiences in the forest.

Culture, Gardens and History in the Wider Unstrut-Hainich Destination

Bad Langensalza has two distinct botanical themes: the Rose Garden showcases almost 450 rose species and varieties on a former factory site covering 18,000 m². At the Botanical Garden, you can see rare cacti and yuccas from South America. The rose collection and the South American plants each offer their own focus. The Thuringian Pharmacy Museum in Haus Rosenthal adds to the cultural attractions: across 276 m², it presents the history of pharmacy from the 18th to the 20th century.

Mühlhausen brings medieval architectural history into focus. The town has 11 medieval churches and a surviving inner city wall ring with numerous defensive towers. 2.2 kilometres of Mühlhausen’s inner, oldest city wall have survived to this day. The churches and fortifications represent different aspects of the historic townscape. For a view across Mühlhausen and its surroundings, visit the Rabenturm: its observation platform is 34.2 metres high and offers a panorama of the town and its surroundings.

At the Opfermoor Vogtei, the small museum displays original finds from archaeological excavations of the settlement and cult site. In a faithfully reconstructed spinning lane, the Rope-Making Museum preserves a landmark of Schlotheim’s traditional rope-making craft. For a different kind of experience, Route 1 of the adventure railbike crosses the Lengenfeld Viaduct: it is 244 metres long, 24 metres high and has eight arches. Check the route’s current availability before your trip.
