When planning a trip to Südeichsfeld, two perspectives suggest themselves: the hiking landscape in Heyerode and the local history of Katharinenberg. The TOP hiking trail brings together nature and history; the local heritage room complements these themes with insights into traditional crafts.

Hiking and Local Heritage in Heyerode

The TOP hiking trail in Heyerode passes through dense beech forests, wooded valleys and open meadows, with numerous viewpoints along the way. The beech forest is part of the “Hainich” Fauna-Flora-Habitat area. The trail also passes the old Heyerode border house, a historic customs house dating from the 15th century, and continues into the beech forest.

The trail features two named viewpoints: “Inselbergblick” and “Wartburgblick.” From there, the view extends to Wartburg Castle and the Thuringian Forest. The forest landscape and distant views thus complement a historic building as distinct aspects of the hike.

At the Heyerode local heritage room, domestic workspaces are recreated using original historic tools and equipment. A working loom is considered its showpiece. The room also presents domestic weaving, cigar making and pattern carving—crafts that were once typical of the Upper Eichsfeld. Visits to the local heritage room are possible by arrangement.

Village Scenery and Winter in Südeichsfeld

In the village of Katharinenberg, the Katharinenberg church ruins, with their tower missing its spire, shape the village scenery. This historic landmark stands in clear contrast to the forests and trails of Heyerode.

In winter, groomed cross-country ski trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels are available around the “Alter Bahnhof” country inn in Heyerode. Conditions depend on snowfall and trail grooming. If you are planning a visit for a specific date, check the current trail conditions.

The Thiemsburg National Park Centre presents its exhibition using films, large-format image panels, interactive exhibits and hands-on stations. The treetop trail begins 200 metres from the National Park Centre. The centre has a large hiking car park, a restaurant, toilets and a public transport bus stop. The fully accessible media guide is available to visitors; tablets and headphones can be borrowed. Check the latest information about operations and facilities before travelling.

Mühlhausen also offers its own focus on cultural history in the wider Unstrut-Hainich destination: the town has eleven medieval churches and a preserved inner town wall with numerous defensive towers. A 2.2-kilometre section of Mühlhausen’s inner, oldest town wall remains today. This offers a different perspective from the single church ruin that defines the village scenery in Katharinenberg.

For a rail-based outing, Route 1 of the Erlebnis-Draisine runs across the Lengenfeld Viaduct. The structure is 244 metres long, 24 metres high and has eight arches. Check the route’s current availability before travelling.
