Friedrichshöhe offers a mix of mountain meadows, hiking trails, cross-country ski trails and cultural attractions. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether the landscape, hiking, winter sports or culture will be the focus of your stay.

Hiking and Mountain Meadows

Friedrichshöhe has a network of hiking trails. These include the mountain meadow and moor nature trail, a circular route that leads around Friedrichshöhe and is unpaved in places. Take the trail surface into account when planning your route, and check current conditions before setting off. The mountain meadows bloom with color and offer beautiful views. Hiking here brings both the character of the trail and the landscape into focus.

Parking and toilets are available along the circular route near Friedrichshöhe. Before setting out, check whether these facilities will be available during your visit.

Winter and Getting There

Friedrichshöhe also has cross-country ski trails. They give your trip planning a distinct winter focus; check current trail conditions before setting out on a specific route.

Bus route 508 connects Masserberg and Goldisthal via Friedrichshöhe with Neuhaus or Theuern. This alternative onward route is relevant when planning your journey: check the current timetable in advance and choose the connection that suits your destination.

Exhibitions and Charcoal Burning

The building housing the nature park administration in Friedrichshöhe has an exhibition for visitors interested in nature, culture and the landscape. The nature park center also has a small exhibition and a slide-and-sound show. If you would like to include these offerings in your stay, check visiting arrangements in advance.

At the “Meilerhütte,” you can learn about traditional charcoal burning, the production of charcoal from wood. This topic adds a cultural perspective on forest use to the nature and landscape experience.

Culture in the Broader Destination of Eisfeld

In the broader destination of Eisfeld, Eisfeld Castle is essentially a medieval castle complex and today houses the town museum. The museum features an extensive porcelain collection, historic workshop displays, toys, local history and regional folklore. Since 2024, a stone marble mill from Truckenthal, dating from 1867, has also been on display again in the permanent exhibition.

The Otto Ludwig memorial is located in the Ludwig family’s summer house, built in 1814. It houses collections relating to the life and work of the poet and musician Otto Ludwig, who was born in Eisfeld in 1813.

The traditional program of the Eisfeld Kuhschwanzfest includes an early-morning wake-up call, a historical guard parade with a fire brigade drill, the commander’s horseback ride and the festival parade.

The school building in Eisfeld, built in 1575 and later extended, is considered the second-oldest school building in Thuringia. Above the round entrance portal of Eisfeld Town Hall is a coat-of-arms relief carved from sandstone in 1557. Eisfeld’s cultural landmarks range from the medieval castle core and 16th-century architectural heritage to the Ludwig family’s summer house, built in 1814.
