Kraftsdorf is characterized by restored half-timbered houses; St. Peter and Paul Church and hiking trails offer further local perspectives. Both architectural history and the landscape are important for understanding the place: alongside the village’s appearance, there are trails through meadows, a nature reserve and a sandstone landscape.

Villagescape and history

Restored half-timbered houses, some more than 200 years old, shape the village’s appearance and represent rural culture and ways of life. St. Peter and Paul Church provides another historical landmark: it was built in 1848 and rededicated in 1980 after renovation. The half-timbered houses and the church’s construction and renovation history are therefore both part of the local story.

Hiking trails and landscape

A hiking trail begins north of the sports field in Kraftsdorf and passes through extensive meadows and a nature reserve. Along the way, it passes disused sandstone quarries and ends at Hubertus Spring. Pale sandstone outcrops characterize the landscape along the trail. Before reaching the trail, there is a long railway tunnel built more than 130 years ago from local sandstone.

Those looking for a route with a specified distance can follow an approximately 12-kilometer hiking loop that starts and ends in Kraftsdorf. The starting and finishing point is the municipal parking lot in the town center. The route passes the quarries in Kirchtal, the railway station, Harpersdorf and Kaltenborn. It then continues over Käseberg or, alternatively, through Tessegrund, along Alte Straße and on to St. Gangloff before returning to Kraftsdorf. Its approximate length and designated route make this loop a different planning option from the trail ending at Hubertus Spring.

North of Kraftsdorf, the trail leads into Kirchtal and is designated as a nature trail. The hiking options thus include both a route with a named destination and a trail designated as a nature trail.

A local museum theme

The Mutz Museum in Kraftsdorf focuses on the electrically charged, egg-laying woolly pig and its connection to Mutzbraten. This offers another distinctive subject to explore beyond half-timbered houses and church architecture. The different themes—village appearance, architectural history, landscape and Mutzbraten—give Kraftsdorf several facets without defining the place by just one kind of visit.

Culture in the wider destination of Greiz

The wider destination of Greiz offers further cultural and historical attractions, all located specifically in Greiz. Since 2010, the Upper Castle in Greiz has housed the permanent exhibition “From the Land of the Bailiffs to the Principality of Reuss of the Elder Line.” It covers the history of the bailiffs, lords, imperial counts and imperial princes of Reuss, as well as the associated culture of small-state court residences. The museum in the Upper Castle also offers a multimedia historical experience, with a computer-animated account of the building’s history and an interactive journey through time.

The Lower Castle in Greiz houses a museum and a textile demonstration workshop. The workshop presents the production and history of Greiz’s textile industry; children and adults can take part in the manual production process. The museum and workshop themes are brought together here, with the demonstration workshop also offering hands-on production.

The Summer Palace in Greiz was built as a summer residence for the princes of Reuss of the Elder Line and is one of the earliest Neoclassical buildings in Central Germany. Greiz Park lies at the foot of the wooded castle hill. As a 19th-century landscape park, the overall grounds are designated a national cultural monument.
