Schönhagen as a Travel Destination

In Schönhagen near Bad Heiligenstadt, the show garden is a specific starting point for a trip with an interest in cultural history. The field chapel, the Schönhagen viewpoint, and a panoramic trail also give the surrounding area a variety of points of interest.

The Schönhagen Show Garden

The Schönhagen Show Garden opened in 2003 on land belonging to the nonprofit association Kuhmuhne Schönhagen e.V. in Schönhagen near Bad Heiligenstadt. It is laid out in a circular design and presents the introduction of many cultivated plants to Central Europe in historical order. A walk takes you through garden displays spanning the Neolithic period, the Middle Ages, and the present day.

The chronological sequence is what makes this garden distinctive: rather than simply viewing the plants individually, visitors can place their introduction in the context of a longer development. The displays span the period from the Neolithic to the present day. This makes the show garden a fitting focus for travelers interested in garden culture and historical connections.

Field Chapel, Viewpoint, and Trail

The field chapel is located in the area around Schönhagen, on a hill along the road to Röhrig. It was built in 1827. The Schönhagen viewpoint is in Schönhagen at an elevation of around 470 meters. The two places offer different points of interest: the field chapel centers on a historic building, while the viewpoint highlights the village’s elevation.

The 4-Länderblick Panorama Trail can also be reached from Schönhagen via a farm track in the direction of Röhrig. Alongside the garden, a viewpoint and a trail are therefore other points of reference for planning your trip. The destinations mentioned differ in character, so you can decide whether you would prefer to focus on cultural history or outdoor experiences.

Uder as a Broader Travel Destination

Uder is surrounded by hills and lies on the Leine River. The village was recognized as a holiday destination in 1961 because of its favorable location and picturesque appearance. This recognition is a historical indication of how the village was viewed at the time. Uder’s extensive green spaces offer opportunities for play and sports.

The cultural history of this broader travel destination also includes the school museum at the Uder secondary school, Schulstraße 4, 37318 Uder. It features an old classroom, historical furnishings, and displays on the school history of the Eichsfeld region. This makes the school a distinct area of interest alongside Schönhagen’s garden history.

St. James Church in Uder also has several historical associations. The present-day church stands almost on the same site as an original church that was already there around 1100. Historic furnishings include a winged altar and high altar, a baptismal font, and carved pew ends. Another sight is a carved equestrian statue of Saint George, about 40 centimeters high; its origins are uncertain.

Other places to visit in Uder include the Mariengrotte and Leinepark. There is a cyclists’ rest stop in the park where cyclists can take a break. A historic Way of St. James once passed through Uder; Uder scouts are working to have it designated and publicized again. These historical and landscape-related themes complement Schönhagen’s specific points of interest without equating them with the sights of the broader travel destination.
