If you are planning a hotel stay in Dingelstädt, you can choose a focus based on your interests: the Breikuchen Festival offers an annual summer event, while the Kanonenbahn cycle route is a clearly described cycling trail. Other attractions include the UnstrutWelle indoor swimming pool, historic buildings and the local history room. This gives you a choice of events, outdoor activities, swimming and history when planning your trip.

Summer Festival, Cycle Route and Indoor Pool

The Breikuchen Festival has been held every summer as a town festival since 2001. The program includes traditional events hosted by local clubs, shows, musical performances and food and drink. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the latest event dates in advance.

The Kanonenbahn cycle route is considered easy to ride and runs for about 32 km from Dingelstädt in the Eichsfeld district of Thuringia to Frieda in the Werra-Meißner district of Hesse. The route includes six tunnels and four bridges. The two options help with different planning questions: for the festival, the key points are its timing in summer and annual recurrence; for the cycle route, they are its approximate distance and endpoints.

The revitalized UnstrutWelle indoor swimming pool reopened in September 2026 and is open to visitors year-round. As operating information can change, it is advisable to check the latest details before your visit.

Churches and Architectural History in Dingelstädt

The present-day parish church of St. Gertrudis was consecrated in 1855 as a three-nave church in the Gothic style. The first church on the same site is already mentioned in documents from the 14th century; when it was built is unknown. St. Gertrudis is the third known church on this site.

The Mühlengehöft at Mühlhäuser Straße 11 offers another architectural feature: it has a stately Renaissance building and an elaborately decorated portal. The name of the pilgrimage church “Maria im Busch” is central to its story. It was named after a slope that was once covered with bushes.

Visitors interested in local history can visit the Dingelstädt local history room in the civic center, on the same floor as the Dingelstädt municipal library. Together with the churches and the Mühlengehöft, it adds another place to explore the town’s history.

The Wider Eichsfeld Travel Destination

The wider Eichsfeld travel destination encompasses more than individual towns and buildings: it includes landscapes, castles, historic towns, open fields, natural monuments, and cycling and hiking trails. Bodenstein Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1098 and stands on a mountain spur of the Ohmgebirge range. Regular guided tours at the castle explore the history of its former lords, the von Wintzingerode family; visitors can also visit the small chapel with its baptismal angel. Check the latest tour dates in advance.

In Heilbad Heiligenstadt, the Eichsfeld Museum in the Baroque Jesuit college spans three floors and explores the region’s history, culture, religious life and folk traditions. The Dün and Iberg mountains around Heilbad Heiligenstadt also offer good conditions for longer hikes on certified TOP hiking trails. The Eichsfeld thus combines historical attractions with regional hiking opportunities.
