When planning your trip to Niederorschel, you can explore the history of the satellite camp, trails in the municipality, and attractions in the wider Eichsfeld destination. Different themes take center stage locally and across the region—from a historical exhibition to hiking and cycling trails.

Cultural history in Niederorschel

On January 27, 2002, the municipality of Niederorschel opened a permanent exhibition about the Niederorschel satellite camp in the presence of former prisoners. The exhibition is located in the Niederorschel local history room. Its subject provides a specific focus for exploring the town’s history: the satellite camp is at the center. The historical opening date marks the start of the exhibition; check current visitor arrangements before you go.

Hiking around Niederorschel

A network of five local hiking trails makes it possible to hike around Niederorschel and connects to the regional and long-distance trail networks. The five local trails describe the selection within the network; another way to find your bearings is the circular trail at the Ahlenbach reservoir in Deuna. It is about 3.2 kilometers long. Benches and shelters are located along the trail. This gives you both a network of several local trails and a loop with a specific stated distance.

The “Kalksteintagebau Deuna” adventure trail runs along the quarry. The Deuna Adventure Trail hiking route starts at Dünkreuz in Deuna, a district of the municipality of Niederorschel. The route description therefore gives a starting point, not the full course of the trail. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

More things to do in the municipality

There is a bouldering wall at the sports field in the municipality of Niederorschel. Children can climb there at different difficulty levels. Another local attraction draws on a legend: the “Bei den Zwergen im Widdei” playground is inspired by a local dwarf legend and features a dwarf castle, slides, and swings. The two locations offer different activities—bouldering at the climbing wall and play equipment themed around dwarves.

The wider Eichsfeld destination

Beyond Niederorschel, the Eichsfeld offers a distinct regional setting. Its landscape includes castles, historic towns, open fields, natural monuments, and cycling and hiking trails. Historic half-timbered buildings and architectural highlights can be found in the Eichsfeld towns of Dingelstädt, Duderstadt, Heilbad Heiligenstadt, and Leinefelde-Worbis.

Castles, museums, and history

Burg Bodenstein was first documented in 1098 and stands on a mountain spur in the Ohmgebirge hills. Regular guided tours at the castle cover the history of its former lords, the von Wintzingerode family; visitors can also see the small chapel with its baptismal angel. In Heilbad Heiligenstadt, the Eichsfeld Museum, housed in the Baroque Jesuit college, presents the history, culture, religious life, and folklore of the Eichsfeld across three floors.

The Eichsfeld Borderland Museum also offers a way to explore history: a circular walking trail featuring original checkpoints, vehicle barriers, and signal fences brings the character of the GDR border to life. Duderstadt’s medieval ramparts have been fully preserved, and a walk there leads beneath old lime and chestnut trees.

Views and trails in the Eichsfeld

Burg Scharfenstein has a viewpoint on its terrace and a 20-meter-high tower completed in 2016. From there, the panoramic view extends across the upper Leine Valley, the Eichsfeld Basin, the Ohmgebirge hills, and the eastern DĂĽn; on a clear day, you can also see the Harz Mountains. Another viewpoint is the accessible west tower of Hanstein Castle ruins. In clear weather, it offers wide-ranging views across the Eichsfeld and the surrounding forests, and on a very clear day, as far as the Brocken.

The DĂĽn and Iberg hills offer good conditions for hiking around Heilbad Heiligenstadt, with certified TOP hiking trails running through the area. For cyclists, the regional Leine-Heide Cycle Route is a long-distance route that starts in Leinefelde and continues to Hamburg. The trails on the DĂĽn and Iberg and the cycle route therefore differ both in activity and in geographic scope.

Traditions and regional cuisine

Every year on Easter Monday, Dingelstädt holds the Steckenpferd-Reiten hobby-horse ride around St. Mary’s Church. Preschool children ride small wooden horses decorated with bells and colorful ribbons. A culinary specialty of the Eichsfeld is air-dried sausage, regarded as a regional delicacy and known beyond the region.
