Heilbad Heiligenstadt lies in the valley of the Leine and Geislede rivers, surrounded by the wooded heights of the Iberg and Dün hills. The historic townscape is shaped by three remarkable Gothic churches, imposing Baroque secular buildings and pretty half-timbered houses. Townscape, museums and history

The Eichsfeld Museum is located in the former Jesuit college, a historic Baroque building dating from 1740. The museum opened there on April 1, 1932, and presents exhibitions on the history, culture, religious life and folklore of the Eichsfeld region across three floors. The Theodor Storm Literature Museum focuses on a different subject: its permanent exhibition explores Storm’s life and creative work from 1856 to 1864, when he worked as a district judge in Heiligenstadt. The collection includes literature by and about Storm, including first editions of his poems and novellas. In this way, local and regional history is presented alongside a specific period in a literary figure’s life.

Spa park and walking routes

Along with Heiligenstadt’s municipal forest, Heinrich Heine Spa Park is the largest continuous green space in Heilbad Heiligenstadt. Much of the 3.5-kilometer, largely accessible sculpture trail runs through the park. Along the way, you’ll pass striking wooden sculptures as well as notable buildings and squares. The Panorama Trail offers a different experience: this just-under-18-kilometer circular route around Heilbad Heiligenstadt is suitable for a varied, active hike. Viewpoints such as “Westblick” and “Paradiesblick” offer views over Heiligenstadt’s rooftops, into the Leine Valley and far across the region. Comparing the lengths highlights the different route profiles: the sculpture trail is shorter and passes through the town, while the longer Panorama Trail loop puts views of the town and countryside center stage.

The Vitalpark also offers its own way to combine exercise and relaxation. Its bathing area includes 1,000 m² of water for relaxing, exercising and swimming; the Vitalpark also has a sauna complex. The Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale Park adds a different theme to the mix. Covering 2,600 m², it features fairy-tale characters, a fairy-tale castle, a Kneipp footbath, a sandbox and play equipment.

Seasonal events and guided tours

The Festival of the Heiligenstadt Carrot Kings is an annual town festival held in September. In summer, fairy-tale storytelling takes place at the castle in the Fairy Tale Park on four Sundays, and the park’s festival is held on the first Sunday in July. Check the dates for your travel period before planning around these events. Heilbad Heiligenstadt also offers town tours and guided tours of the Eichsfeld region. Getting there and the wider region

By car, Heilbad Heiligenstadt is accessible via the A38 motorway and exit 5, Heilbad Heiligenstadt. The railway station is on the Halle (Saale)–Hann. Münden line. From the nearest ICE station in Göttingen, you can reach Heilbad Heiligenstadt by Regional-Express in about 30 minutes; check the current timetable before travelling.
