Grönwohld can be explored through three themes: the BahnRadWeg, the history of the Wire Mill and the NDR series “Neues aus Büttenwarder.” There are also offerings from the Grönwohld home brewery. If you are looking for a hotel in Grönwohld, these interests can help you decide where to start: would you like to focus on the cycling route and historic sites, are you interested in the filming history, or is a brewery visit the main item on your itinerary?

By bike: Route C and Tour 19

The BahnRadWeg Route C runs through Grönwohld on its Trittau–Glinde course and has local signposts. Information board C-1 is located at the Wire Mill. Check route conditions and local signage before setting off.

Nearby, Tour 19 follows historic railway lines back to Trittau; the lines converge south of Grönwohld. The railway embankments offer views of meadows and ponds. Route C therefore describes the route through Grönwohld, while Tour 19 highlights its nearby links to historic railway lines and the surrounding landscape.

The Wire Mill: industrial history at the entrance to the village

The Wire Mill is located at the entrance to Grönwohld and was built in the early 17th century to produce copper plates. It was later used for paper production and was listed as a historic monument in 1972. It is considered Stormarn’s oldest surviving industrial building. The progression from copper-plate production to paper production and then to protected historic status shows how the building’s use changed over time.

The Wire Mill is privately owned and can be viewed from the outside. Check access conditions before visiting.

Film history and brewery offerings

Since 1997, Grönwohld has served as a filming location for the NDR television series “Neues aus Büttenwarder,” which ended in 2021. The Dorfkrug is also identified as a filming location in the heart of Grönwohld. Alongside the older history of the mill, visitors can therefore explore the connection to the TV series and a specific filming location.

The Grönwohld home brewery offers brewing seminars for individuals and groups. Visitors can register for brewery tours, with or without tastings. As availability may vary, check current options before making plans.

Büttenwarder Pils, associated with Grönwohld, is still brewed at the Grönwohld home brewery. The brewery also fills special beers into bottles and kegs. If you are interested in a particular beer, check its current availability in advance.

Grönwohld within the wider destination of Stormarn

At the regional level, Stormarn has more than 20 circular cycling routes, as well as BahnRadWege along disused railway lines. The cycling-route network includes two church routes, as well as the Karpfen and Limes tours. This is a broader context than the specific BahnRadWeg Route C through Grönwohld.

The region’s cultural history can also be placed in context: Ahrensburg Castle was completed in 1585 and has served continuously as a museum since 1955. These sites tell different stories: the Wire Mill’s former industrial use in Grönwohld and Ahrensburg Castle’s continuous use as a museum in the wider Stormarn region.
