Lägerdorf is a great choice for a trip that combines an interest in chalk history with the surrounding landscape. Nearby chalk quarries, woodland and moorland, as well as the Breitenburger Canal and the Moorkanal, shape the area. A nearby nature reserve lies within the municipality of Rethwisch. Add to that viewpoints, architectural history and circular trails, and you can tailor your stay to your interests in industrial history, architecture or nature.

Chalk and Canals

At the end of Heidestraße, a viewpoint offers views of the Schinkel and Heidestraße chalk quarries. An approximately 8 km circular hike passes through this landscape. The Breitenburger Canal was built between 1875 and 1877 to transport peat, chalk, clay and cement. The Lägerdorfer Moorkanal runs for two kilometres from the Breitenburger Canal to the bridge on Rethwischer Straße.

Trails Through Moorland and Heath

The nearby Nordoer Heide nature reserve brings together heath, grassland, water and woodland habitats that provide a home for rare animals. The marked trails there are approximately seven to eight kilometres long, mostly circular, and suitable for pushchairs. Another circular trail in the nearby Breitenburger Moor leads through the moorland. The nearby Stör is also suitable for canoe trips and walks.

Industrial History and Architecture

Lägerdorf’s transformation from a small farming village into an industrial town began around 1860 with the chalk and cement industry. Lägerdorf’s Lutherkirche was built in 1911 to plans by the architect Johann Theede and follows the North German brick architecture style. The church houses a pneumatic Voelker organ dating from 1912. It was restored in 2018 and is considered the only surviving organ made by this company in Schleswig-Holstein.

The nearby Breitenburg Castle is one of the most important secular monuments in Steinburg. In the 16th and 17th centuries, it was a political and cultural centre of Schleswig-Holstein. Views of the church and castle add further historical perspectives from the surrounding area to the region’s industrial history.

Plan Your Visit and Journey

Official guided tours are offered at the Heidestraße chalk quarry. Helmets are compulsory for visits to the Lägerdorf chalk quarries; advance registration is also required, and participants must be at least ten years old.
