Heiligenstedten lies right on the Stör and is characterised by its church, two bridges over the Stör and a castle. The church is the focal point of the historic town centre. Heiligenstedten Estate and the Präbendenhaus add further architectural history; a cycle route also crosses the lifting bridge. These features offer clear points of interest when planning a stay: local history, riverside scenery and cycling.

The church and the history of the bridges

The present-day building of St. Mary’s dates from the 13th century; it was extensively altered in 1580, giving it its current appearance. Inside, you can see two images of the Virgin Mary from the Early and Late Gothic periods, an altar from 1580, a triumphal group, a bronze baptismal font and a pulpit from 1648. If you would like to view the furnishings, check current access arrangements in advance. The building’s history and its various furnishings each add their own distinct historical elements.

The Heiligenstedten lifting bridge originally served a practical purpose: it made it easier for residents south of the Stör to reach church services at St. Mary’s. Later, trade led to the footbridge being replaced by a bridge. The bridge is therefore part of both the town’s history and the riverside landscape.

Heiligenstedten Estate and the Präbendenhaus

Heiligenstedten Estate is an ensemble comprising a manor house dating from 1769, gatehouses from around 1780 and a former garden with bridges and ditches. It also includes an obelisk from 1790 and a former gardener’s house from the 19th century. The manor house was extensively remodelled in 1769 to plans by French architect Nicolas-Henri Jardin. The ensemble’s different building periods create several historical layers, so it cannot be reduced to the manor house alone.

The Präbendenhaus is located near the lifting bridge. It was built in the 17th century as a poorhouse and completed in 1638, with accommodation for 16 older village residents. Its original purpose adds a social dimension to the architectural history.

Cycling and a break by the Stör

On the Stör-Törn, cyclists can cross to the other side of the river at the Stör bridge in Heiligenstedten and continue along the route. The Störtörn passes through Heiligenstedten over the lifting bridge, which marks the transition between the marshland and the geest. There is also a viewpoint on the Stör at the lifting bridge at Brückenstraße 7. The historic bridge and the bridge keeper’s house create a maritime setting for a short break. Route conditions and information about rest stops may change; check the latest information before setting off.

Fishing lake and refreshments

The Heiligenstedten fishing lake covers about 3.4 hectares and is fed by several natural springs. There are several shelters directly by the lake, parking on site and a toilet. As information about the facilities may change, check before travelling there.

The Zur Erholung restaurant is also located on the Stör. Its facilities include a restaurant and function hall, a bowling alley and a coffee garden right by the river. If you are planning to stop for a meal, check its current operating status before you travel.
