Forest and leisure around Trappenkamp
Segeberger Forest lies right next to Trappenkamp, offering opportunities for outdoor activities. Seven routes lead to places of interest and through scenic areas around Trappenkamp. As an additional regional point of interest, Holstein Switzerland Nature Park begins a few kilometres from the town.
Alongside the children’s pool, the forest swimming pool offers a variety of sports and leisure activities: minigolf, beach soccer and volleyball are available, as are chess, table tennis and table football. Play equipment and sandpits round out the selection. This makes it possible to choose between active games and quieter pursuits as different focuses for a visit.
ErlebnisWald Trappenkamp offers walk-through wildlife enclosures and nature experiences in the forest. There is also a large adventure playground, as well as opportunities for picnicking or barbecuing. Today’s ErlebnisWald grew out of the former Trappenkamp wildlife park and is now part of the Schleswig-Holstein state forests. Free parking is also available there; check the current parking conditions before your visit.
Museum Bunker G5 and the history of the town
Museum Bunker G5 is one of around 100 former ammunition storage buildings at the Trappenkamp ammunition depot. Its exhibition traces how the site changed: from military use, through the settlement of refugees, to the founding of Trappenkamp in 1956. The town’s history therefore begins at the former depot site and continues through to the establishment of the municipality.
Another part of the exhibition focuses on items from the Gablonz glass industry, which were made in Trappenkamp until the 1950s. This topic adds a glimpse into local manufacturing to the history of the site. Museum Bunker offers guided tours for individuals, groups and school classes by arrangement. Be sure to arrange a tour time in advance.
Crafts and art in the town also explore a range of themes. The Trappenkamp experience forge is a workshop museum created by a family with 150 years of blacksmithing history. A sculpture of the Monk’s Way at the corner of Hermannstädter Straße and Kieler Straße points pilgrims along the route. The Donkey with Ducats stands in front of the Sparkasse in Trappenkamp.
Excursions and choosing where to stay
For planning your visit, the seven routes and the bunker museum offer different ways to explore: the routes lead to places of interest and through the landscapes around Trappenkamp, while the bunker focuses on the history of the former site. Those looking for nature and exercise can also consider the neighbouring Segeberger Forest, the forest swimming pool and ErlebnisWald’s activities as different options. Culture enthusiasts can focus on local history, the glass industry and blacksmithing.
For motorhomes, there is a free parking area for up to twelve vehicles at the sports centre. Check current availability before your visit.
