Seedorf: Lake, Trails and Renaissance History
Accommodation in Seedorf
Seedorf combines a protected lake with a striking historic building. This gives you different ways to shape your stay: spend time by the water and explore the trails, or take a closer look at Seedorf Gatehouse and the history of the estate. Whether you focus on nature, architecture or exhibition themes is up to you, based on these features of the area.
Lake Seedorf: Swimming and Trails
Lake Seedorf covers around 75 hectares and is up to 4.2 metres deep. It lies within a designated nature reserve. Gut Seedorf, with its historic gatehouse and manor house, is nearby. In Seedorf, landscape and estate history sit side by side.
There is an official bathing area at the lake, and a cycling and hiking trail runs around it. Swimming and getting active are different ways to experience the lake. Stay on designated paths, do not enter protected areas, and use the official bathing area for swimming. Also follow local signs.
Seedorf Gatehouse and Its History
Seedorf Gatehouse was built in 1583 and is an important Renaissance building in Schleswig-Holstein. Museum rooms are housed in the former prison cells and torture chamber. The exhibition focuses on life at Gut Seedorf and the history of the families who owned it. Exhibits and information panels cover both topics, complementing the architectural perspective with the history of the estate.
Concerts are held in the Knights’ Hall, and guided museum tours are also offered regularly. As the programme and tour availability may change, check the latest dates before your visit. This lets you plan your museum visit with a specific purpose, without assuming that a concert or tour is always available.
Hiking in Holstein Switzerland Nature Park
Holstein Switzerland Nature Park offers more than 270 kilometres of hiking trails, including marked routes around Seedorf, Glasau and Nehms. In addition to the cycling and hiking trail by the lake, this network offers more ways to explore the landscape on foot. Routes vary, and specific trail conditions can change. So check the current signs and local conditions before setting out on a hike.
When planning, you can choose between the trail around the lake and the marked routes in the nature park. One follows the shoreline, while the route overview also includes Glasau and Nehms. Which option you choose depends on whether the lake or a longer route through the landscape is your priority.
