Garbek: Hiking, Cycling and Historical Connections
Accommodation in Garbek
Garbek between the stream and Lake Warder
Garbek is a district of the municipality of Wensin in the Segeberg district of Schleswig-Holstein. Wensin lies on the shore of Lake Warder; the small Garbek stream flows through the district. The village and stream therefore share the same name, while the lake provides a geographical reference for the municipality. If you are planning a hike or bike ride, the local routes offer specific starting points. They differ in destination, loop format and time frame, offering different ways to plan your stay.
Hiking: route or loop
The connecting route from Sophienberg via Garbek and Wensin to Lake Warder is 7.0 kilometres long; the walking time is about two hours. The Redder circular route is 7.16 kilometres long and is listed with a walking time of approximately one hour and 50 minutes. The distances and time frames are similar. The route format is therefore the main factor in choosing between them: the connecting route leads to Lake Warder, while the Redder route is a loop. If reaching a destination by the lake is important to you, the first route description fits; if you prefer a loop, the Redder route is the corresponding option.
The character of the Redder circular route is also described in more detail: for about one kilometre, the route follows a narrow path through one of the nature park’s most beautiful Redders. The narrow path is therefore one section, not the entire 7.16-kilometre loop. There is no car park directly at the circular route. The nearest official car park is in the Garbek district; from there, it is about a 20-minute walk to the hiking trail. Allow for this walk in addition to the loop’s walking time, so that the journey and hiking section are accounted for separately. Route details may change; check the current route before setting out.
Cycling from Garbek
Landpartie 5 starts and ends in Garbek. This circular cycling route is one of five routes developed by the Trave-Land administrative district. The programme invites visitors and residents to get to know the area’s landscape. The tour’s fixed connection to the village is key for planning: its start and finish are in the same district. This distinguishes Landpartie 5 from the hiking route to Lake Warder, which ends at the lake. The route can be considered a standalone circular tour, without equating it with the walking times for the hiking trails.
Historical connections in Wensin
The manor house at Gut Wensin is one of Schleswig-Holstein’s oldest manor houses to remain largely unchanged. It is on private property and is not open to visitors. It is therefore a historical point of reference during a stay in the municipality, not a place to visit. Garbek is represented in the Wensin municipal coat of arms by a windmill that no longer exists. The mill is a historical symbol of the district, not a surviving building. A historic megalithic tomb is located on the Gut Wensin golf course.
