Nordhackstedt offers several different points of interest for planning a trip: the church with its diverse furnishings, Bürgerpark and fishing opportunities on various bodies of water. Local club life also provides a distinct way to explore the history of the Schleswig Geest.

Church: Art and architectural history

In 1897, a tower was added when the church was extended to the west. The wide chancel arch is adorned with late Gothic paintings. They were discovered in 1926 and uncovered and restored in 1927. Above the chancel arch is also a Passion sequence carved from oak, dated to 1284.

The granite baptismal font dates from the 12th century, and the Gothic wooden altar crucifix from the 13th century. An altarpiece with wings, rediscovered in 2009, was restored; its central shrine and painted wings probably date from the 16th or 17th century. The pulpit from 1713 features reliefs depicting the birth, baptism and resurrection of Christ. The west gallery holds twelve Baroque paintings depicting the apostles. The different dates show that the building’s history and furnishings span several centuries. The furnishings bring together scenes from Christ’s life and depictions of the apostles.

Fishing and events

There are twelve fishing platforms at Forellensee Nordhackstedt. As facilities may change, check the current situation before your visit. The entire lake can be rented by the hour or by the day for corporate or club events; confirm availability in advance. Use of a barbecue area is also included for outings such as children’s birthday parties.

A fishing permit is required to fish in the Rodau and the Bürgerpark pond. Check the applicable conditions before fishing. This distinguishes the planning requirements: at Forellensee, fishing platforms and events are relevant, while at the Rodau and the Bürgerpark pond, the permit requirement should be taken into account.

Bürgerpark and local clubs

Bürgerpark is located behind the cemetery. Flower beds and water lilies shape its spacious parkland. This gives it a different focus from the church: here, greenery and aquatic plants define the scene; there, it is architectural history and historic furnishings.

The Heimatverein Schleswigsche Geest e.V. was founded in 1953 to preserve the history of the Schleswig Geest. In addition to its historical work, its activities include events and trips. If you are interested in a specific program item, check dates and participation requirements in advance, as the program may change.

Regional cultural context

In the wider destination of Schleswig-Flensburg, Haithabu and the Danewerk add to the historical context; both have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018. More than 25 kilometres of the Danewerk rampart still remain today. If you are also choosing your stay based on regional cultural themes, you can consider this wider context alongside the artworks in Nordhackstedt’s church.
