Those considering Lürschau as a destination for a hotel stay will find two notable themes here: Arenholzer See and its recreational opportunities, and the historic Ox Road. There is also the “Auf dem Holzweg” cycling route, which runs through forests, lake landscapes and villages. This makes it possible to experience Lürschau through its waters and landscapes, as well as its history and cycling.

Arenholzer See: Circular Trail, Bathing Area and Summer Opening

The landscape of Lürschau is shaped in particular by Arenholzer See. A circular trail runs around the lake; there is also a centrally located bathing area and a kiosk at the bathing spot that operates in summer. If you like to plan your stay around activities by the water, you can consider these as different options: the trail goes around the lake on foot, while the bathing area offers a separate focal point.

The kiosk is an additional amenity at the bathing spot during the summer. If you would like to include it in your plans, bear in mind that it is seasonal. The lake therefore offers an opportunity for a walk, a place to swim and a seasonal place to stop. This combination gives the area a different character from a trip focused primarily on a historic route or a longer cycling route.

Distinguishing the Ox Road from the Cycling Route

A section of the historic Ox Road has been preserved in Lürschau in an almost original state. This surviving stretch of road complements the lake’s natural setting with a tangible piece of cultural heritage. The distinction is useful when planning a trip: the circular trail and bathing area take centre stage at the lake, while the preserved section represents a historic route.

The themed “Auf dem Holzweg” cycling route is about 57 kilometres long. It passes through forests, lake landscapes and villages, and also goes by Arenholzer See. Part of the cycling route follows the historic Ox Road. This applies to that section of the route, not automatically to its entire length. The circular trail around the lake and the regional cycling route are therefore two different ways to explore the landscape and its paths.

This allows you to distinguish the longer named route from the local options by the lake and the preserved section of the historic road, without treating them as a single walk.

Schleswig-Flensburg: Regional Nature and Culture

In the wider Schleswig-Flensburg travel region, Haithabu and the Danevirke have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018. More than 25 kilometres of the rampart of the Danevirke are still preserved today. These regional cultural sites complement Lürschau’s local themes with a broader historical context; their World Heritage status and the length of the preserved rampart provide two different points of reference.

The Schlei Nature Park, also in the wider Schleswig-Flensburg travel region, offers a different kind of landscape: rolling hills, forests, hedgerow landscapes, rapeseed and grain fields, sandy beaches and bathing bays. The brackish-water areas of the Schlei provide a habitat for numerous endangered bird species. Also within the wider Schleswig-Flensburg travel region, more than 130 bird species can be observed on Holnis, including around 65 breeding species. The region’s natural attractions thus range from a variety of landscapes to birdwatching.

At 773 hectares, Geltinger Birk is the largest nature reserve in Schleswig-Flensburg District. It has well-developed paths and guided walks that share information about the local flora and fauna.
