Winnemark: Hiking in Karlsburger Holz and by the Schlei
Accommodation in Winnemark
When planning a stay in Winnemark, specific route features can help you find your bearings: the circular hike takes in Karlsburger Holz, open stretches across fields with views of thatched roofs, and a return along the Schlei. On cycling tours, the field path entrance to Winnemark and a recommended detour to the Netzausleger are useful points of interest. Karlsburg Manor House, with its protected lime tree avenue, is another highlight. This allows you to factor the route profile, landscape, and architectural history into your excursion planning.
Hiking: Circular Route with a Shorter Option
The “Thatched-Roof Idyl and Estate Landscape around Winnemark” circular route is 14.76 kilometers long and rated moderate. The start and finish are at Dorfstraße 3. A good basic level of fitness is required for the hike, although the paths are easy to walk. The moderate rating therefore goes hand in hand with easy-to-walk paths and the need for stamina. Check the route surface conditions before setting out.
The detour to Sieseby is optional: skipping it shortens the route by about four kilometers. If you include the detour, you will pass a rest area right on the Schlei shore with two wooden benches. After the section near Sieseby, the return to Winnemark follows the Schlei shore exclusively. When choosing a route option, you can therefore consider whether to include the extra walk to Sieseby and the rest area along the detour.
Karlsburger Holz, Fields, and the Schlei
Karlsburger Holz is considered the largest forest area on the Schwansen Peninsula. The natural broadleaf forest lies on gently rolling glacial moraine. Beech forest with woodruff is the dominant type, with smaller areas of oak-hornbeam forest. These landscape features add a distinct forest and terrain element to the open stretches of the hike.
The stretches across fields offer views of typical thatched roofs. After the section near Sieseby, the return to Winnemark follows the Schlei shore exclusively. Forest, open fields, and the shore path are different parts of the same circular hike. The calm waters of the Schlei provide breeding, resting, and wintering grounds for numerous endangered bird species.
Cycling to the Netzausleger
The “Siesebyer Schleichwege” cycling route reaches Winnemark from Karlsburger Holz via field paths. For a detour in Winnemark, the route recommends the Netzausleger, a large, hammock-like structure offering views across the Schlei. You can therefore consider the recommended detour as a separate addition when planning your ride.
Another route detail concerns the SchleiUferTörn: between Sieseby and Winnemark, one section follows a gravel path. Take this surface into account when choosing your cycling route, and check the path conditions in advance.
Karlsburg Manor House and Historical Notes
Karlsburg Manor House, built in 1721, is of cultural and historical value. A protected lime tree avenue, planted in 1737, leads to it. The building and avenue add a historical dimension alongside the landscape features that are the focus of hikes and cycling tours.
There is also a historical note about Schwonsburg: in 1903, remains of what are believed to be late medieval ramparts were documented there; their historical significance is unknown.
