Sehestedt on the Kiel Canal
Accommodation in Sehestedt
Sehestedt and the Kiel Canal
The Kiel Canal is a prominent landmark in Sehestedt. Its construction between 1887 and 1895 divided the town into a northern and a southern part. The ferry provides a free crossing of the canal for motor vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians. It is located at canal kilometre 75.331. There is also a snack bar and a local market at the ferry landing. If you plan to use the ferry, check its current operating status in advance. If you plan to visit the snack bar or local market, check their current offerings as well.
Routes along the canal, through the forest and to the energy park
The three routes offer different highlights. The Kleine Forstrunde (Small Forest Loop) is 3.0 kilometres long and passes unusual trees and wetland habitats. On the way back, it runs between the canal and the forest. The 4.2-kilometre Dorfrunde (Village Loop) leads from the Danish Monument to the ferry landing and along the canal to the KanalTreff. At 4.8 kilometres, the Energieparkrunde (Energy Park Loop) is the longest of the three routes. It leads to the energy park grounds, where you can learn about renewable energy.
In terms of length, the Dorfrunde is between the Kleine Forstrunde and the Energieparkrunde. This lets you choose a route to suit your schedule while keeping the different destinations in mind: forest and wetland habitats, the ferry landing and canal, or renewable energy. Trail conditions and installations at the energy park may change. Check the latest information before setting out if a particular route or the grounds are an essential part of your plans.
Hiking in the wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde destination
Longer hiking trails also provide a regional context for your stay. In the wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde destination, the 180-kilometre Naturparkwanderweg (Nature Park Hiking Trail) passes through the district’s four nature parks. The section in Hüttener Berge Nature Park reaches Sehestedt after 36.5 kilometres. This regional route is on a different scale from the three local trails and offers an additional point of reference for planning your hike.
Gut Sehestedt and its history
Gut Sehestedt is located on the site of an old moated castle, which was surrounded by a moat until 1865. The estate complex includes a manor house built in 1728. Three half-timbered buildings with thatched roofs are listed; they were given protected status in 1996. The history of the ensemble’s construction thus goes back considerably further than the division of the town by the canal.
Church, museum and memorial stone
The Church of St Peter and St Paul has a wooden tower and an interior that is predominantly Late Classicist in style, dating from 1829. The House of History’s exhibition includes historical sources, original objects and short films. Special exhibitions are also held there regularly. If a particular exhibition is a key reason for your visit, check the current programme in advance.
A memorial stone commemorates a parachute accident during Bold Guard near Sehestedt. Residents of Sehestedt and Scots dedicated it on 27 July 1975. The stone adds a reminder of this event and the people involved in the dedication to the town’s architectural and local history.
