Ascheffel: Nature, Trails and History
Accommodation in Ascheffel
Ascheffel combines the landscape of HĂĽttener Berge Nature Park with a local history dating back to the early modern period. Nature and culture are therefore central to planning a trip; hiking and cycling routes in the wider nature park area are also relevant.
Landscape and views from Aschberg
Aschberg rises to 98 metres and offers sweeping views across the hilly surroundings. The local landscape is also shaped by around 130 kilometres of hedgerows. These two features create different impressions: the viewpoint offers a broad panorama, while the hedgerows give the landscape a more varied structure. Aschberg is also home to a 20-metre-high observation tower.
Hiking and cycling in the nature park area
The wider HĂĽttener Berge Nature Park area offers 20 hiking routes and six cycling routes. Hiking trails range from 3 to 17 kilometres, while cycling routes range from 14 to 40 kilometres. An official nature park app also brings together information on attractions, places to eat and parking.
In the wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde destination, the district’s signposted cycling network covers 1,000 kilometres. Together with the cycling routes in the wider Hüttener Berge area, this provides two scales for planning: the size of the regional network and the lengths of individual routes.
The 180-kilometre nature park hiking trail crosses the HĂĽttener Berge landscape from Maasholm towards the Kiel Canal. Its 36.5-kilometre HĂĽttener Berge section includes Aschberg. These figures distinguish between the total route and the section through the landscape: this makes it easy to tell apart the length of the entire hiking route and that of the HĂĽttener Berge section.
The Aschberg Green Classroom
The Aschberg Green Classroom was set up on Aschberg in 2021. It is freely accessible and serves as a starting point for excursions to nearby hedgerows. Access rules may change, so it is advisable to check shortly before your visit.
The learning activities cover two subject areas: shrubs in hedgerows and tree characteristics. A cube puzzle matches leaves, fruit, flowers and shrub names to introduce the shrub species found in hedgerows. A tree puzzle for schoolchildren involves comparing bark, heartwood and weight, as well as examining annual rings.
Historical traces and art
There was a glassworks in Ascheffel around 1550; in 1633, Duke Frederick III had a paper mill built here. These two dates offer a glimpse of different forms of early local production: glass and paper.
The Bismarck statue on Aschberg is also one of the town’s historic landmarks. Made of copper sheet, it was created by Schleswig-Holstein sculptor Adolf Brütt. It was unveiled there in September 1930, after being moved from Knivsberg near Aabenraa.
Dining and finding a hotel
Huk's Restaurant in Ascheffel serves vegetarian and vegan dishes. According to the restaurant, 80 percent of the ingredients it uses are regional and seasonal. The restaurant also says that its fish and meat come from regional producers. Menus and information about product selection may change, so check both before visiting.
