Schacht-Audorf on the Kiel Canal
Accommodation in Schacht-Audorf
Schacht-Audorf lies directly on the Kiel Canal, which is considered the town’s biggest attraction. Nature trails and local history are also worth exploring when planning your trip. If you’re looking for hotels in Schacht-Audorf, consider whether ship watching, nature, or local history will be the focus of your stay.
Ships and the canal
The Kiek-Ut viewing platform lets you watch seagoing ships and look toward the railway high bridge. In the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district, the 325-kilometre NOK Route runs mostly along the canal and offers views of passing container ships and cruise ships. In some places, the route leaves the canal bank to reach sights, so it does not run directly along the water throughout. This means the focused view from Kiek-Ut and the longer perspective along the route offer different experiences. If you include the route in your plans, check the current route and signage beforehand, as conditions and the route may change.
Cycling routes in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district
The Rendsburg-Eckernförde district has five long-distance cycling routes, five e-bike tours, and twelve themed routes ranging from 24 to 79 kilometres. There is also a signposted network of 1,000 kilometres of cycling paths. Marked cycling routes pass natural landscapes, cultural monuments, historic sites, and other attractions; they run mostly on roads with little traffic. Some routes can be shortened and are considered particularly suitable for families. The 24-to-79-kilometre range and the option to shorten some routes offer different planning choices. As the regional route network may be updated and routes and signage may change, check a current overview when making your specific selection.
Nature trails and hiking
You can explore nature trails in Schacht-Audorf. Another local trail has its origins in a former industrial railway: after it was closed in 1975, most of the route was converted into a hiking trail. The 180-kilometre Nature Park Hiking Trail also runs through the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district, passing through its four nature parks. The European long-distance hiking trail E1 also crosses the district, running through the Hüttener Berge, Brekendorfer Wald, and over the Aschberg; it is marked along its entire length with a white St Andrew’s cross. The local nature trails, former railway section, and regional hiking trails therefore offer different scales of planning.
The nearby Dörpsee natural swimming lake has diving boards and a bathing island. Check the facilities before your visit.
Village history
The Schacht-Audorf Village Museum explores everyday life through the ages. It displays exhibits and maintains an archive of documents, newspaper articles, and photographs. Its focus differs from the canal and nature themes: it centres on how village life has changed over time. The archive adds written and photographic material to this perspective.
