Nortorf in the Wilstermarsch
Accommodation in Nortorf
The village combines cycling through the marsh with a landscape of grassland, ditches and waterways, as well as traces of history. You can choose which of these aspects interests you most during your stay.
Cycling in Nortorf
Nortorf has a network of paths and farm tracks that visitors can use to cycle through the characteristic natural marshland. A specific route adds to the local cycling options: the 38-kilometre Land-unter-Törn runs from Wilster via Nortorf. Along the way, the landscape includes farmland, wide views across the marsh, historic farms and drainage ditches.
The network and the tour answer different planning questions. The local network represents cycling in Nortorf in general; the Land-unter-Törn is a specific route with a total length of 38 kilometres and its own distinctive landscapes. You can decide whether to follow the local network or make the tour your main focus. Check route conditions and signage before setting out, as both can change.
The Wilstermarsch and its landscape
Nortorf is located in the Wilstermarsch, a landscape shaped by agricultural grassland, extensive drainage measures, ditches and waterways. Agriculture and water management are thus both part of the landscape. Along the Land-unter-Törn, drainage ditches and wide views across the marsh are prominent features of the route. You can consider the local landscape as part of a broader whole and see the tour as a specific route through the marshland. In the wider Steinburg destination, the lowest point in the Federal Republic of Germany lies in the Wilstermarsch, at 3.54 metres below Normalhöhennull.
History and routes
The first documented mention of Nortorf dates from 1465. Archaeological finds include a bone flute and a flint sickle. These clues offer different ways to explore the past: the year places the village within documented history, while the artefacts are archaeological evidence. Many historic routes also followed the drainage canals. Ditches and canals are therefore part of both the landscape and the area’s historic route network.
Getting around the village
The B5 federal highway runs through the municipality of Nortorf, between Itzehoe and Brunsbüttel. A freight railway line to Brunsbüttel also runs through the municipality.
Cycling in the wider Steinburg destination
In the wider Steinburg destination, the Elbe Cycle Route is one of five long-distance cycle routes that pass through the Steinburg district. This offers two ways to think about cycling: the local network and the Land-unter-Törn relate to Nortorf, while the Elbe Cycle Route belongs to the regional level of Steinburg. This allows you to distinguish a local tour from a long-distance cycle route in the wider destination.
