Hörsten lies on the Kiel Canal, which runs through the village. At the same time, the municipality’s area consists predominantly of wet meadows and pastureland. The canal and the open spaces provide two distinct points of reference in describing the area: the canal describes the village’s location, while meadows and pastures characterize most of the municipal area.

Landscape and location

To the northwest, the Luhnau separates Hörsten from Breiholz and Hamweddel; to the northeast, the Jevenau forms the boundary with Schülp bei Rendsburg. Unlike the Kiel Canal, which runs through the village, these two waterways mark the municipal boundaries.

Airfield and cycling route

Schachtholm airfield is located on the southern side of the canal in Hörsten. Scenic flights over Schleswig-Holstein can take off from there. If you are interested in scenic flights, Schachtholm is a practical point of reference for planning your trip. The NOK Route offers a different regional connection for cyclists: it is 325 kilometres long and follows the Kiel Canal as well as passing through its hinterland. Its route connects the canal corridor with sections inland; the distance gives you an idea of the scale if you would like to include a more extensive cycling route in your plans.

Motorhome site and restaurant

The motorhome site at Schachtholm NOK airfield is located in Hörsten. The site is listed as having 52 pitches in green surroundings, directly beside the Kiel Canal; only a road lies between the site and the waterway. Only motorhomes with their own bathroom facilities are allowed. There are no sanitary facilities at the site. These conditions are important when choosing an overnight stop for your motorhome. Check them again before setting off, as site rules and capacity may change.

The Himmelsstürmer restaurant is located right next to the motorhome site at Schachtholm airfield. It serves regional and Balkan cuisine. If the restaurant is relevant to your plans, check the current menu in advance, as the selection may change.

Rendsburg-Eckernförde as a regional context

Looking at the wider destination of Rendsburg-Eckernförde broadens the view to the district. Around 70 kilometres, or two-thirds, of the Kiel Canal runs through the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district. Cyclists can use a signposted network of 1,000 kilometres of routes. There are four nature parks in the district; a substantial part of them consists of nature and landscape conservation areas, and they provide habitats for diverse wildlife and plant life. The 180-kilometre Nature Park Hiking Trail passes through all four parks. In fine weather, the 98-metre-high Aschberg offers panoramic views extending to the Kiel Canal, Eckernförde Bay, and the state capital, Kiel. Cycling routes, nature park trails, and the viewpoint add further topics to the regional context for planning your trip. The Rendsburg-Eckernförde district also has 55 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline.
