Hohn can be explored through distinct themes of nature and history. At Hohner See, the focus is on bird habitats and the autumn migration. Other highlights include the former railway line, now a cycling and walking path, the Hohner ferry, local history and architecture. You can plan your trip around the topics that interest you.

Hohner See, birdlife and otters

Hohner See is considered the last remaining shallow-water lake on a geest. It is part of a nature reserve that also includes Königsmoor and Hartshooper Moor. The lake provides breeding and resting habitats for numerous bird species. In autumn, thousands of migratory birds gather there before flying south. This brings together the lake’s enduring role as a habitat and a particularly notable seasonal event.

Otters are another of Hohn’s nature highlights. At the otter enclosure, visitors can see young otters from an observation platform. Wild otters may also be spotted in the surrounding rivers, streams and ditches, as well as at Hohner See. When planning your visit, you can choose between visiting the enclosure and possibly observing animals in the wild.

On foot, by bike and across the Eider

The former railway line near Hohn station is used as a cycling and walking path. The Hohner ferry offers another way to get around, crossing the Eider for pedestrians and cyclists in natural surroundings. The path and the river crossing provide two different options to include in your stay. If you plan to take the ferry, check the operating times in advance.

Village history, an exhibition and St. Mary’s Church

Hohn’s village museum is housed in the former railway station. Objects donated by local residents document village life, while a database supports genealogical research going back to the 18th-century colonists. Everyday history and family research thus offer two different ways to explore the area’s past. The same station is also home to a Transall aircraft and a military history exhibition on Air Transport Wing 63.

The more than 300-year-old St. Mary’s Church, consecrated in 1694, is another distinctive historical landmark. Its features include a medieval baptismal font, a late medieval crucifix, and carvings on the pulpit and west gallery. The year of consecration and the medieval and late medieval furnishings represent different historical periods.

Baking at the Backhuus

The village museum also includes the Backhuus, with its wood-fired stone oven. On designated dates, bread, cakes and pizza are baked there under the guidance of experienced bakers—for Hohn residents or as part of museum events. Baking is therefore offered on specific dates and is not a daily visitor activity. If you would like to plan a visit around it, check the scheduled dates in advance.
