Hamdorf lies on the Eider River on the Schleswig-Holstein Geest ridge. Its landscape, local history and transport links offer different perspectives on the town. If you are looking for a hotel in Hamdorf, you can plan your trip around the things that matter to you, such as nature watching, cycling, history or activities on the water.

Nature and seasonal observations

A notable natural feature is the Bargstaller Au lowland, which is associated with the municipalities of Hamdorf and Elsdorf-Westermühlen and is part of the Natura 2000 network. It provides breeding habitat for meadow birds and serves as an important stopover area for migratory waders and waterbirds from autumn to spring. Larger flocks of Bewick’s swans are regularly observed there in early spring.

The wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde destination is also shaped by the Eider-Treene-Sorge landscape, with its extensive low-lying grasslands, raised and lowland bogs, reed beds, wet meadows and natural shallow lakes. Westensee-Obere Eider Nature Park is characterised by numerous lake complexes in the Schleswig-Holstein hill country. It includes Westensee, which covers around 7 km² and is a popular destination for day trips. The banks of the Eider in Westensee-Obere Eider Nature Park are a habitat for kingfishers. There are four nature parks in Rendsburg-Eckernförde district, crossed by the 180-kilometre Nature Park Hiking Trail. In fine weather, the 98-metre-high Aschberg offers panoramic views reaching as far as the Kiel Canal, Eckernförde Bay and the state capital, Kiel.

Cycling and activities on the water

The surrounding Eider lowlands have an established network of cycling routes for leisure and local recreation. In the wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde destination, the district offers five long-distance cycling routes, five e-bike tours and twelve themed routes ranging from 24 to 79 kilometres. The district also has a signposted cycling network spanning 1,000 kilometres. On the south bank of the Kiel Canal, a cycling and walking path runs towards Kiel or Brunsbüttel.

Around 70 kilometres, or two-thirds, of the Kiel Canal run through Rendsburg-Eckernförde district. The area around Hamdorf offers opportunities for recreational paddling. The nearby Breiholz bathing area offers a place to swim in the Eider. Check the bathing area’s availability before your trip.

Local history and archaeological traces

Hamdorf was first documented on 28 May 1285 under the name Hammathorp. Archaeological evidence from the Hamdorf area includes Stone Age axes and arrowheads, hearths and fire pits, a burial ground with urns and two megalithic tombs. The first written mention provides a firm date, while the finds add material traces from different eras to the town’s history.
