Haseldorf lies on the Elbe. The landscape of the Haseldorf Marsh, the Haseldorfer Binnenelbe with Elbvorland nature reserve, and historic sites such as the Bandreißerkate and Haseldorf Castle give your stay a variety of focal points. Visitors looking to combine wildlife watching, walks or cycling with culture will find suitable options in the village and the marshland.

Marshland and wildlife

The Haseldorf Marsh lies between the Pinnau and the Elbe. It includes the Haseldorfer Binnenelbe with Elbvorland nature reserve, a tidal river landscape protected by dikes. The protected area is home to a diverse range of animal and plant life. The marshland provides habitat for up to 300 breeding pairs each of grey herons and cormorants. Birdwatchers may also have the chance to spot rare species.

The Elbmarschenhaus introduces visitors to the natural and cultural landscape of the marshes through its exhibition and outdoor grounds. The 7,000-square-metre outdoor area is a freely accessible nature experience space. The NABU Nature Centre in Haseldorf Scholenfleth offers another perspective on habitats, explaining those of the nature reserve as well as its animal and plant life. The grounds include an insect hotel, a butterfly garden, an herb bed, an orchard meadow with raised beds, and a willow teepee with a tunnel. Talks and guided tours are available for groups.

Walking routes, cycling tours and the estate park

The Haseldorf area offers nature-focused visitors routes for walking and cycling. From Haseldorf harbour, cyclists can follow the dike path via Hetlinger Schanze and Fährmannssand. Conditions on this route may change, so check them before setting out. One cycling tour follows the old dike to the Haseldorfer Binnenelbe nature reserve, passing the remains of Bishorst and the Pinnau flood barrier, then continuing to Schleswig-Holstein’s oldest swing bridge and on to Haselau.

The trees and ditches in Haseldorf Estate Park provide habitats for many birds and other animals. A historic lime-tree avenue leads through the park to the manor house. The estate park is freely accessible year-round; the buildings and the garden close to the house are private. Check access conditions before your visit.

Culture, history and fruit varieties

The Bandreißerkate, dating from 1764, offers a glimpse into a traditional craft: visitors can see how willow is made into barrel hoops. The historic building also provides a setting for cultural events such as concerts and readings. Haseldorf Castle dates back to the 18th century and is surrounded by a scenic park.

Right next to Haseldorf harbour is a freely accessible orchard covering two hectares and home to 180 historic fruit varieties. These include “Schöner aus Haseldorf,” “Seestermüher Zitronenapfel” and “Ananas Renette.” Fruit can be sampled during the harvest season. This gives a visit a seasonal dimension: tastings are available during harvest season, while the orchard and its varieties are a year-round point of interest for nature and culture enthusiasts.
