Bad Malente-Gremsmühlen lies in the heart of Holstein Switzerland, on a ridge between Kellersee and Dieksee. The network of lakes can be experienced by paddling, hiking, cycling or taking the 5-Lake Cruise. There are also routes through the hilly landscape of East Holstein and historic places. These different highlights offer practical points of reference when choosing a destination: waterways, outdoor activities and cultural history can each be incorporated into your stay in their own way.

Lakes, Water and the Town’s Setting

The 12-kilometre 5-Lake Cruise operated by the Weiße Flotte excursion boats travels across Dieksee, Langensee, Behlersee, Höftsee and Edebergsee. The Schwentine also connects Kellersee and Dieksee, passing through Malente town centre and by the spa gardens. Alongside the lakes themselves, visitors can therefore enjoy both a named boat trip and a waterway linked to the town centre.

Cycling Routes and Walking Trails

The 11.1-kilometre Dieksee circular trail also passes through Malente-Gremsmühlen. The 23-kilometre “In the Footsteps of the Boulders” cycling loop passes through the hilly landscape of East Holstein around Malente. The route includes eight large boulders; signs at each one point to the site’s history, the landscape view or directions along the trail. The type of activity and stated distances provide a practical way to compare the two routes; the cycling loop also supplements its route description with these landscape and historical details.

Eight of the 21 Nordic walking routes run in and around the climatic health resort of Bad Malente. As route listings can change, check the current route overview before planning.

Landscape and Habitats

The 13-hectare WunderWeltWasser is a destination in its own right. Wooden boardwalks connect the different biotopes and areas, making the site accessible to older people as well. The boardwalks define a clear route through this landscape area, setting it apart from the longer circular trails.

Church and Local History

The thatched Tews-Kate is a former smokehouse dating from the Thirty Years’ War and now houses the Malente local history museum. The permanent exhibition includes agricultural equipment, household furnishings and tools of the trade. An entry in the Schleswig-Holstein monument database dated 4 June 2026 lists Tews-Kate as the oldest surviving smokehouse in East Holstein.

The historical roots of the Maria-Magdalenen Church date back to the 13th century. Its nave and chancel have been preserved in their original form. Inside, there are carvings on the Renaissance pulpit, the altar and the wall panelling. The Gremsmühle is a water-powered grain mill.

Events in the Spa Gardens

The spa centre, open-air stage and music pavilion in the spa gardens are used throughout the year for concerts, readings and other events. If you would like to plan your stay around a particular date, check the latest event listings.
