Bosau combines cultural history with routes through the countryside and along the water. St. Petri Church and the Dunkersche Kate represent different historical and cultural highlights; circular trails, natural meadows and the beach add to the range of attractions. When planning a stay, you can focus on architectural history, route length and landscape as separate themes.

Church and Kate: Architectural History and Culture

St. Petri Church was built from fieldstones in 1151/52 by Bishop Vicelin and dedicated to the Apostle Peter. Summer concerts are held in the church; it also lies on the Mönchsweg long-distance cycle route. You can book guided tours of the church through the Bosau Tourist Information Office by calling 04527/97044 or emailing info@luftkurort-bosau.de. Check the contact details before making an inquiry, as they may change.

The Dunkersche Kate is a half-timbered building dating from the 17th century, with a thatched roof, a cottage garden and a historic bakehouse. Throughout the year, the Kate hosts rotating art exhibitions or arts and crafts markets. The Katengarten is right next to it, with well-kept paths and boxwood planting typical of the region. The Kate brings together architectural style and gardens, alongside changing cultural events.

Hiking Trails Through the Countryside

Near Bosau lies the Thranbruch, a historic cultural landscape with many natural meadows. The area is a drained moorland used for grazing, and many hiking routes run through the Thranbruch. The Wierensredder observation tower offers views over this cultural landscape. On the hiking routes, you can experience the Thranbruch as a cultural landscape of natural meadows and pastureland.

The Haselnussschlucht is a natural, 300-meter-long ravine in Bosau that flows into the Großer Plöner See. A narrow hiking trail leads through the ravine, across a bridge and over Löjaer Berg, continuing to the Panoramaweg. The route links several named points, while the ravine itself is a distinctive landscape feature because of its length and course to the lake.

Historic Circular Trails and Natural Beach

The Rote Bänke circular trail is a 5.22-kilometer historic route in Bosau. Passing seven red benches, it takes you through Bosau’s history along the Großer Plöner See. The benches and historical context give the route a different focus from a trail where distance alone is the main consideration.

A longer route option is the 36-kilometer circuit around Schleswig-Holstein’s largest lake, which can be started directly in Bosau. Many other routes start at the Haus des Gastes in Bosau. The 5.22-kilometer historic circular trail and the 36-kilometer lake circuit differ considerably in length and route format—a useful comparison when planning your outing.

Bosau’s natural beach is a 150-meter-long sandy beach without stones. Facilities listed there include beach volleyball, a playground and a bistro. In addition to cultural sites and hiking routes, the beach and leisure facilities offer further options for a stay in Bosau.
