For a stay in Süderdeich, you can plan around different highlights, including trails, animal experiences and regional culture. The Hebbel Circular Trail connects Wesselburen with Norddeich and Süderdeich; Warfthof Wollatz is located in Süderdeich. In Wesselburen, the KOHLosseum celebrates the region’s cabbage-growing tradition.

On the Hebbel Circular Trail

On the way to Süderdeich, the Hebbel Circular Trail passes through meadows and fields. It is divided into three sections, each 8 to 12 kilometres long, and can be shortened. This gives you a choice of different distances when planning your route. The trail is suitable for hiking, jogging, Nordic walking and cycling.

A quill symbol marks the route. At scenic viewpoints, you’ll find literary information boards and places to sit. In Wesselburen, the trail passes the Hebbelhaus and the Hebbel Museum. The route thus brings together landscape and activity with literary points of interest, while its different sections need not all have the same character. Another way to experience nature in the Dithmarschen destination is to join a guided mudflat walk on the coast at low tide, where you can discover the rich life of the Wadden Sea; knowledgeable National Park mudflat guides accompany these walks. Check dates and tide times in advance.

Animal experiences at Warfthof Wollatz

At Warfthof Wollatz in Süderdeich, children can enjoy supervised pony experiences: they can groom ponies and lead them under supervision. The farm also offers alpaca walks and individually arranged carriage rides through the surrounding countryside. Carriage rides also go in the direction of the outer dike. Alongside exploring the landscape on foot, you can choose from several different animal experiences.

Cabbage culture in Wesselburen

The KOHLosseum in Wesselburen combines a historic sauerkraut workshop with a farmers’ market and a cabbage museum. The exhibition covers rural life, farming methods and historic machinery. Other museum topics include cabbage cultivation, Dithmarschen’s soils, drainage, dikes and nature. The farmers’ market offers regional products, including North Sea coast kimchi and sauerkraut. Together, the exhibition, market and workshop explore different aspects of the region’s cabbage-growing tradition.

In the Dithmarschen destination, the KOHLosseum’s Krautwerkstatt offers demonstrations followed by tastings. They are scheduled for 2, 3 and 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; from 1 November until Easter, only the 2 p.m. demonstration takes place. Check the schedule before your visit.

Marshland and farming in the Wesselburen area

The Wesselburen area is characterised by around 10,000 hectares of intensively farmed marshland. The fields are used to grow grain, rapeseed, cabbage, potatoes and sugar beet. Cabbage is therefore one of several crops grown in the region; at the KOHLosseum, its cultivation history has a dedicated section. If you’re interested in agriculture and landscapes, this offers a different way to explore the area than following the hiking trail: topics range from the farmed marshland to the exhibition’s coverage of soils, drainage and dikes.
