Dithmarschen as a wider travel destination
The wider travel destination of Dithmarschen also offers its own cultural, nature-related and activity-based themes. The Dithmarscher Landesmuseum in Meldorf takes you through 1,200 years of Dithmarschen: from the wealth of the farmers’ republic to rural everyday life in the 1960s. The Dithmarschen museum network brings together a total of 19 museums, run by both paid staff and volunteers, in eleven locations.
At the Stone Age Park Dithmarschen, you can take part in practical activities such as flint knapping, archery, making Stone Age jewellery, starting a fire and baking bread. Right next to the park, the Stone Age Forest covers around 40 hectares of natural outdoor grounds, which are permanently accessible free of charge. The Stone Age Forest in Albersdorf also contains nine original archaeological monuments. If you are planning a specific visit there, check the access information in advance.
Dithmarschen also has various places to visit for nature and coastal experiences. The National Park Station Friedrichskoog is an information centre with a national park exhibition on the south side of the harbour. Guided mudflat walks along the Dithmarschen coast are led by local guides with expert knowledge of the national park; at low tide, they reveal the diverse life of the Wadden Sea. Tides and guided tour dates vary, so it is worth checking the current schedule before planning your visit.
The hiking options also vary in length and route type. The first stage of the North–Baltic Sea Hiking Trail runs through Dithmarschen and is just under 40 kilometres long. The long-distance trail as a whole consists of five stages and runs from Meldorf to Kiel. Near Lunden, the “Mötjensee and White-tailed Eagle” route is an easy, 12.79-kilometre circular trail for lowland hiking.
A culinary highlight is the KOHLosseum cabbage workshop, where demonstrations are followed by tastings from Tuesday to Thursday at 2, 3 and 4 p.m. From 1 November until Easter, only the 2 p.m. demonstration takes place; check the current programme before your visit. During Dithmarschen Cabbage Days, farmers’ markets, town festivals, and sports and cultural events take place throughout Dithmarschen. The individual events and dates change.
