Schalkholz combines a distinctive Geest landscape with evidence from various eras. Glacial landforms, a passage grave and historic houses give the village its many facets. The Peace Oak in the village center is also part of its character. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus primarily on the landscape, megalithic culture or village history.

Geest Landscape and Glacial Landforms

Schalkholz lies on a glacial push moraine, and marked differences in elevation shape the terrain. A well-preserved hedgerow landscape, gentle hills and extensive lowlands give the village its characteristic Geestland feel. This landscape is therefore shaped not only by ridges: hills and lower-lying areas are equally part of the surrounding scenery.

The Schalkholz ice-lobe basin is one example of the area’s glacial formation. This glacially formed lowland is surrounded by push moraines, with a raised bog at its center. Moraines, basins and bogs are different features within this landscape. Anyone interested in how the Geest was formed will find several of these features together in one area.

Megalithic Culture and Cycle Route

The Schalkholz long barrow LA 58 lies in a small wooded area beside the cycle route from Schalkholz to Linden. HISTOUR signs point out the monument, and there is a bench available after you explore the woods. LA 58 is protected as a cultural monument under Section 8 of the Schleswig-Holstein Monument Protection Act of 2015.

HISTOUR is a digital visitor guide and navigation tool for people interested in the history, culture and landscape of Dithmarschen. It also caters to cyclists and day visitors looking for sights away from the main roads. It provides an additional way to find your bearings when exploring local cultural heritage.

The Schalkholz passage grave is the southernmost example of the oval Nordic passage grave type. Excavations uncovered Funnel Beaker pottery and a hoard of flint blades. In November 2021, the passage grave was moved back to Schalkholz, near its original findspot. Another archaeological feature is a well-preserved older Bronze Age burial mound on the western edge of the oak wood near Schalkholz.

Village History and Cultural Connections

Schalkholz has many yellow brick houses dating from before the First World War. In the village center, the 1871 Peace Oak stands at the historic crossroads. Both offer a glimpse into the village’s history beyond its prehistoric monuments: the houses reflect its earlier architectural history, while the oak marks a historical point at the central road junction.

The connection to megalithic culture also extends beyond individual monuments. Schalkholz joined the Megalithic Routes association on January 1, 2020, and is linked to the European Route of Megalithic Culture. This adds a wider cultural connection to the local history without equating the individual sites.
