Sankt Michaelisdonn lies at the transition between the marsh and the Geest. The Geest edge rises up to 40 metres above the flat marsh; Spiekerberg reaches 42 metres and is the highest point of the nearby Geest edge. This change in landscape defines the area and offers a starting point for walks, bike rides and excursions to historic attractions.

Landscape, Kleve and Circular Routes

The area of Kleve lies southeast of Sankt Michaelisdonn. It documents the post-glacial geological development of Dithmarschen. The Kleve nature reserve is part of the European Natura 2000 network and can be explored on foot or by bike. The area includes two viewpoints. This brings together an experience of nature and an insight into how the landscape was formed.

Four signposted circular routes of varying lengths are available for tours. They lead around Sankt Michaelisdonn, across Kleve, and through Christianslust and Gudendorfer Forest. If you prefer to plan a shorter or longer loop, you can compare the route lengths; the routes also take in different areas mentioned here. Kleve is ideal for walks and bike rides, while the circular routes offer a choice of different tour lengths.

Edda Mill and Views of the Marsh

The historic Hoper windmill, “Edda,” is a landmark of Sankt Michaelisdonn. It was built as a Dutch-style windmill in 1842. Only footpaths and farm tracks lead to the mill, so the best way to reach it is on foot. At the Klev by the mill, the viewpoint offers views across Sankt Michaelisdonn and the marsh. Those interested in the Geest edge will find a tangible connection here between the townscape and the landscape: from the mill, the view stretches across the town to the flat marsh.

Church, Memorial and Museum

St. Michaelis Church was built in 1611 and gave Sankt Michaelisdonn its name. Inside, the altar dates from 1693 and the baptismal font from the late 17th century. The building thus offers a chance to explore the town’s history and two distinct historic furnishings. On the market square, the Claus Harms memorial commemorates the theologian and miller’s son Claus Harms.

Another cultural stop is the Freemasonry Museum. It is dedicated to the history of Freemasonry and displays related exhibits from around the world. The museum is housed in the former Westdorf primary school. The church, memorial and museum each offer a different focus: church history, a local figure and the history of an international movement.
