Krumstedt brings together a village on the Geest with moorland and lowland landscapes, as well as a long local history. If you are looking for a hotel in Krumstedt, its historical themes, natural areas and local leisure activities can help guide your choice of destination.

Geest, lowlands and raised bog

Krumstedt is a clustered village on a Geest peninsula, surrounded by two stream valleys and extensive moorland and lowland areas. Krumstedt raised bog lies in the district forest. Another landscape feature is the Landschaftliches Hochmoor between Krumstedt and Schafstedt: it is located in a spruce forest and covers about 23 hectares.

The Landschaftliches Hochmoor formed in a closed depression above an impermeable layer of soil. It has survived drainage, peat extraction and afforestation. The district forest is popular with mushroom foragers. If you plan to gather mushrooms, check locally for any applicable rules.

Local history and historic routes

The first recorded mention of Krumstedt dates to a papal document from 1208. A later historical connection is the Ox Road: in the 16th and 17th centuries, this trade route between Dithmarschen and Holstein passed through Krumstedt. The two dates mark different chapters—the early mention of the village and a later period of trade.

Krumstedt’s local history also covers the Hare War, the 1288 conflict between the people of Dithmarschen and the Holsteiners. The name refers to the conflict, not to an additional local attraction.

Walking routes, leisure and refreshments

Krumstedt offers a variety of opportunities for cycling, horse riding and walking; cafés provide a chance to take a break. A seasonal highlight is the Krumstedt Nativity Trail: every year during Advent, numerous nativity scenes decorate the walking route. Exact dates may vary, so it is advisable to check them before visiting.

Radcafé Schnepel offers cyclists a place to take a break and also welcomes drivers and walkers. It has an e-bike charging station. The garden has a play area with a slide, swing and other play equipment. The food menu includes homemade cakes and gateaux, ice-cream sundaes and hearty lunch dishes. Facilities and offerings may change; if you have a specific need, check in advance whether the charging station is available and what is currently on offer.

At Hofladen Tumat, the offerings include meat for grilling, sausages, cold cuts and dishes from the field kitchen. The range also includes regional eggs and honey, homemade jam, herbs, and handmade wool, clay and wooden goods. Products and ordering options may change; ask about the current range if needed.
