Epenwöhrden: Marsh, Moor and History
Accommodation in Epenwöhrden
Epenwöhrden combines marshland with moorland areas and a local history dating back to early settlements on dwelling mounds. Other features include the Dusenddüwelswarf monument, the climate tree, and local traditions. This makes it easy to distinguish the themes of a stay: landscape, history, and community life in the village.
Marsh and moorland north of Meldorf
Epenwöhrden is located in the expansive marshland north of Meldorf. A large part of the municipal area east of the B5 is moorland. This brings two distinct types of landscape into focus: the marshland and the moorland area on the eastern side of the federal highway. The “Vom Moor in die Geest” (“From the Moor to the Geest”) cycling route also passes through protected moorland and villages, including Epenwöhrden. It offers a direct connection to the moor and also takes you through several villages.
Dwelling mounds, battle history, and monument
Local history is linked to the settlement of the marsh on elevated dwelling mounds. Settlement traces date from the 4th to the 8th century; Epenwöhrden was first documented in 1447. A glacial erratic at the Dusenddüwelswarf commemorates the Battle of Hemmingstedt. This battle preserved Dithmarschen’s de facto independence for 59 years. The monument was erected on February 17, 1900, exactly 400 years after the battle. An information pavilion explains the events. Signs to the Dusenddüwelswarf are posted on the B5 between Meldorf and Hemmingstedt.
The climate tree as a landscape viewpoint and rest stop
At the junction of Epenwöhrdener-Moor and the L147 stands a pedunculate oak regarded as the first climate tree in Germany: Climate Tree No. 1. A large glacial erratic marks the site and the center of Dithmarschen. The spot is a picnic destination with views across the Dithmarschen landscape. There are seating areas and bicycle stands at the climate tree; briefly check before your visit whether these amenities are still available. The local highlights therefore have different focuses: the Dusenddüwelswarf centers on the history of the battle, while the climate tree offers views of the landscape.
Local traditions
Epenwöhrden keeps traditions such as the children’s bird-shooting festival, the leasing of village paths, a seniors’ outing, and a local festival. The children’s bird-shooting festival takes place every year at the end of the school year and includes games such as ring-tilting on bicycles, skittles, golf, and ring-tilting on a carousel. If you would like to plan your visit around one of the other events, check the dates in advance.
Dithmarschen as a regional setting
In the broader travel destination of Dithmarschen, the Dithmarschen State Museum in Meldorf offers a wider perspective on regional history. Its exhibits take visitors through 1,200 years of Dithmarschen—from the wealth of the peasant republic to rural everyday life in the 1960s. Agriculture, dikes, and drainage channels are part of the landscape of inland Dithmarschen. This regional perspective complements Epenwöhrden’s specific local features with a broader historical and landscape context.
