Neuensalz combines its connection to Pöhl Dam with hiking trails and historic sites. The municipality of Neuensalz shares the recreational area around Pöhl Dam with the municipality of Pöhl. The district of Altensalz lies directly on the reservoir. The names Altensalz and Neuensalz also reach back into the history of the landscape: the historic salt springs after which both places were named now lie beneath the waters of the dam. The description of the area thus brings together present-day leisure activities and an older history of the landscape.

Pöhl Dam and the Forebays

Below the settlement of Neuensalz lies the Neuensalz forebay, which dams the Rabenbach. Pöhl Dam offers a variety of activities on the water, including surfing, sailing, swimming, boat trips and pedal boating. These activities may operate seasonally. The size of the sailing area is another useful point of reference when planning: it covers more than four square kilometres and is open to both beginners and experienced sailors. Since sailing is seasonal, check the season before your visit. Trips across the dam offer views of the Neuensalz and Thoßfell forebays; routes may change, so it is best to check the current route.

Hiking and Trails by the Water

For a hike, the approximate length is a useful point of comparison: the circular trail around the dam is about 20 kilometres long, crossing meadows and passing through forests, with views of Pöhl Dam. The crests of the Neuensalz and Thoßfell forebays can also be walked along. This means the area offers two distinct options: a named circular route and walkable forebay crests. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they can change.

The Vogtland as a Wider Setting

In the wider travel destination of the Vogtland, hiking, cycling and mountain biking are among the activities available around forests and green hills. For comparing route lengths, the circular trail around the dam is about 20 kilometres long, while the Vogtland Panorama Trail in the Vogtland measures 225 kilometres. These distances therefore provide different scales for planning a hike.

Chapel, Church and Castle Ruins

The Neuensalz Chapel offers a distinct historical focus. First mentioned in historical records in 1529, it served as a manor chapel and was reconstructed between 1981 and 1987. Today it is a concert and exhibition centre, and its acoustics are remarkable. As the specific programme may change, check dates before your visit.

Altensalz Church adds another architectural highlight: it has a Gothic wooden ceiling with Baroque ornamentation dating from around 1660. The Eule organ was built in 1909 and installed in 1910. These details place two distinct periods of the church’s furnishings side by side, from the ornamentation of the 17th century to the organ of the early 20th century.

The ruins of Mechelgrün Water Castle can be visited in the district of Mechelgrün. The water castle was built in the 13th century.
