Muldenhammer – Forest Trails, Moorland and Space Travel
Accommodation in Muldenhammer
Muldenhammer brings together forest and moorland themes with the history of space travel, historic bell casting and mining. The attractions offer a range of experiences: explore moorland and forest landscapes, compare hiking routes by length and character, or discover space travel and regional history. You can shape your stay around the themes that interest you most.
Experience moorland and forest
The municipality of Muldenhammer includes the Am alten FloĂźgraben Special Area of Conservation (SAC). It is an enclave of natural spruce forest with former peat-cutting areas and small regeneration zones, surrounded by near-natural spruce bog and montane spruce forests. The Am alten Torfstich moorland nature trail near HammerbrĂĽcke is approximately 2.5 kilometres long and passes through the Am alten FloĂźgraben and Muldenwiesen protected areas. The focus here is on the moorland landscape and its different types of forest.
A free forest car park is located on Lehmgrubenweg in Muldenhammer, in the district of FriedrichsgrĂĽn, near the entrance to the moorland nature trail. Check parking options before you travel. Trail conditions may vary seasonally.
Hiking routes with different highlights
The Waldgebiet circular trail connects Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz and Tannenbergsthal within Muldenhammer on a route focused on the forest. It passes through Saxony’s largest contiguous forest area and by the 230-year-old spruce stand in the Drei Bächel natural forest reserve. Along the route are quiet ponds, flowing streams and colourful mountain meadows. This circular walk takes in forest sections, bodies of water and open meadows.
The circular route to Vogtlandsee offers a different focus: it is 11.5 kilometres long and runs almost entirely along forest trails. The route includes swimming spots at Vogtlandsee and a large playground in GrĂĽnheide Forest Park. At around 2.5 kilometres, the moorland nature trail is considerably shorter than this circular route. Access to the water and facilities may vary depending on the season.
Space travel and local history
The German Space Travel Exhibition is located at Dr.-Sigmund-Jähn-Str. 4 in Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz, within Muldenhammer. It features original spacesuits and research equipment, with a focus on the flight of Dr Sigmund Jähn, the first German cosmonaut. Exhibition topics may change over time. The Rautenkranz circular hiking trail starts at the exhibition car park, offers views of the settlement and passes the Cottafelsen rock and a fallow deer enclosure.
Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz also has a historic tradition of iron bell casting: more than 9,000 church bells were made there. The guided tours at the Tannenberg Mine visitor mine cover a different historical period, focusing on the mining history of the Vogtland region from the 16th to the 20th century. Check tour dates before your visit.
The wider Vogtland region
The wider travel destination of Vogtland offers other distinctive attractions. The Sparkasse Vogtland Arena Klingenthal is one of Europe’s most modern large ski jumping hills. An experience railway takes visitors to the 32-metre-high inrun tower, where spectacular views over Klingenthal await. The Musical Instrument Museum in Markneukirchen is home to the world’s largest playable violin. Musical instruments have been made in the Upper Vogtland for more than 350 years.
