Discover Elsterberg: Castle Ruins, Hiking Trails and Town History
Accommodation in Elsterberg
Elsterberg offers specific starting points for a trip that may include historic sites, hikes and water activities. These themes can help you choose where to stay: you can focus on the landscape and views, architectural history or cultural events.
Castle Ruins and Town History
Elsterberg Castle Ruins are an extensive complex: built shortly before 1225, the built-up area covers 1.5 hectares. The grounds are freely accessible. The Elsterberg local history museum is housed in a surviving defensive tower and presents the area’s history. The complex thus combines its expansive grounds with a tangible insight into the town’s history.
St. Lawrence’s Church also offers several points of historical interest. A church dedicated to St. Lawrence is documented in Elsterberg as early as 1225; the present building was rebuilt after the town fire of 1840. The stained-glass windows in the nave date from around 1909, while those in the altar area date from the time of construction. The church also houses the 1848 organ, which has two manuals, a pedal, 35 sounding stops and around 2,000 pipes.
The town hall adds another chapter to the town’s history. It was rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style after a town fire and inaugurated in 1843; its hall is decorated with six stained-glass windows. The redesigned market square, the town hall, the rectory and the surrounding residential and commercial buildings are places to linger and stop for a meal.
Hiking Trails and Landscape
A well-developed network of hiking trails surrounds Elsterberg and connects its smaller districts. Marked trails lead to Kriebelstein, a 407-metre-high viewpoint with panoramic views. Kriebelstein rises 130 metres above Elsterberg and the Steinicht nature reserve. Other marked trails lead into the nature reserve.
Burgleite links the landscape along the White Elster with wooded and open areas and offers panoramic views across the Elster Valley. This gives you several options when choosing a route: a marked viewpoint at Kriebelstein, trails in Steinicht, and the combination of river, woodland and open landscapes at Burgleite.
Water Activities and Events
Elsterberg’s forest swimming pool has a 25-metre swimming pool, a separate solar-heated paddling area for children and a non-swimmer area with a large water slide. Other features include a waterfall, a bubbling fountain, massage jets and floor bubblers. Seasonal opening arrangements may change, so check the current opening hours before visiting.
The Ruins and Local Heritage Festivals preserve Vogtland customs, traditional dress and dialect through performances. The festivals were later held every four years; individual editions and dates may change. At the medieval knights’ pageant, you can watch demonstrations of historic crafts and try the activities yourself. The programme may vary from one edition to another, so check the dates and programme for the relevant edition before making plans.
