During a stay in Wilsdruff, you can explore local history and culture as well as the history of technology in Grumbach. The district of Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge provides the wider travel setting, with its own natural and cultural attractions. If you are looking for a hotel in Wilsdruff, it helps to decide in advance which themes you want to shape your stay.

Market Square and St. James’ Church

The historic market square is home to a post-mile column, a market fountain and the town hall. The town hall has a tower carillon with glass bells, which is considered the world’s first tower carillon to use glass bells. This distinctive feature adds an unusual musical element to the square’s other historic features.

St. James’ Church was built around 1150 and is considered one of Saxony’s oldest Romanesque churches. It also serves as a cultural venue and a motorway church. Both its architectural history and these two roles are therefore relevant to understanding the church.

Technology and Getting There

In Grumbach, the restored historic wind turbine is open to visitors as an open-air museum. Visitor facilities include a rest area and information panels. This lets you combine a stop with a look at the turbine and its explanatory displays.

Wilsdruff has direct connections to the A4 and A17 motorways. The drive to Dresden Airport takes about 20 minutes; traffic conditions can affect the actual journey time. If this estimate is important for your plans, take the traffic situation on your travel day into account.

The wider district of Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge

The district of Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge is home to Saxon Switzerland National Park, Saxony’s only national park and Germany’s only rocky national park. The Altenberg Mining Museum offers a different perspective on the region’s history. It provides a comprehensive overview of the 550-year history of tin ore mining in Altenberg, which began around 1440. Mining ended in 1991 when operations were closed.

On the plateau of Königstein Fortress, modern exhibitions and interactive stations tell the fortress’s story. There are also guided tours, hands-on activities and cultural events. Individual exhibitions may change, and programmes may vary. If a particular offering is important to your plans, check the relevant dates.

At the Osterzgebirge Wildlife Park, you can see native wildlife such as fallow deer, red deer and mouflon, lynxes, wildcats and raccoons during a walk. There are also non-native animals, including white-tufted marmosets, coatis, meerkats, Asian small-clawed otters and Bennett’s wallabies. The animals live in a naturalistic environment; the animals kept at the park may change.

The routes in the district also vary in how they are used: the Malerweg is a hiking-only trail and cannot be explored by bicycle or e-bike. The Elbe Cycle Route runs for 40 kilometres through Saxon Switzerland. This comparison helps you plan hiking and cycling separately.

The “Speciality Weeks” take place every year in the Erzgebirge part of the district. The event celebrates the full diversity of local cuisine. Before making plans, check the dates of the relevant edition if you would like to include the event in your stay.
