Lommatzsch is the center of the Lommatzscher Pflege in the loess hill country of central Saxony. The region is known as the “granary of Saxony.” Its landscape includes fertile fields, orchards and tree-lined avenues stretching toward the Elbe Valley. In Lommatzsch, points of connection to the town’s history meet paths through this cultivated landscape.

Town history around the market square

One of the town’s best-known sights is St. Wenceslas Church. With its three towers, it is one of the few churches of this type in Saxony. Numerous deep cellars lie beneath the historic market square, and some are still in use today. Tours of Lommatzsch’s deep cellars can be arranged individually. A 360-degree photo tour offers an impression of the Schaubergkeller; if you plan to use the tour to prepare for your visit, check its availability in advance.

The Lommatzsch Local History Museum was founded in 1909 and opened to the public in 1911. Its collection is housed at Markt 14, in the oldest building on the market square. This also locates the town’s history in a specific building: the museum address is on the same historic market square beneath which the deep cellars lie.

Exhibitions, digital insights and events

The Terence Hill Museum explores the actor’s connection to Lommatzsch during his childhood. The exhibition includes audio guide stations that use QR codes. The focus on Terence Hill’s childhood offers a different perspective from the ecclesiastical and civic history around the market square.

The digital historical town tour is titled “Historical Town Tour - Digital.” It features 360-degree panoramas, historical photographs, interactive maps and virtual drone flights over the landscape. This lets you distinguish between different ways of exploring local history: the museum collection and on-site exhibition are complemented by digital views and maps.

The town welcomes visitors to the Summer Night Ball, the Harvest Thanksgiving Festival and the Lummscher Kraut Market; the Hofweihnacht and carnival events are also part of the calendar. Event dates vary from year to year, so check the relevant dates before your trip.

Cycling and hiking trails in the Lommatzscher Pflege

Numerous routes in the Lommatzscher Pflege can be explored on foot or by bike throughout the year. The cycling routes described here follow notably different courses: the Lommatzsch Circular Route starts at the historic market square and returns to Lommatzsch. On its way to the Elbe, it passes through wide fields and small villages. Part of the route follows the Elbe Cycle Route; the return journey takes the Elbe-Mulde Trail.

The Obstblütenweg is the shortest cycling connection from Lommatzsch to the Elbe Cycle Route at Niederlommatzsch. It is signposted in both directions along its entire length and provides directional and distance information as well as orientation boards. This offers an alternative to the circular route that returns to Lommatzsch: a signposted connection to the Elbe Cycle Route.
