Discover Thallwitz
Accommodation in Thallwitz
Thallwitz lies on the eastern terrace edge of the Mulde between Wurzen and Eilenburg. Castle history, traditions of water power, and landscapes along the Mulde and Lossa rivers shape different aspects of the town. The castle reflects several historical developments, while the sawmill showcases water-powered technology; Herrenteich and Lauch are further examples of local natural features.
Castle History and Historic Sites
Thallwitz was first documented on 31 July 1253 under the name “Talvitz.” Thallwitz Castle was built in the 16th century and converted into a hunting lodge at the end of the 19th century. Thallwitz Park was laid out in the French style. These different dates trace a long historical arc, from the town’s early name to later changes to the castle.
The Schösserhaus is one of the oldest buildings in Thallwitz and is home to the Thallwitz Local History Association (Heimatverein Thallwitz e.V.). Nearby, Nischwitz Castle adds to the area’s castle history: it was built between 1714 and 1721 and later given its Rococo style by Heinrich von Brühl.
Canitz Park covers about four hectares. Its features include reconstructions of Slavic and Germanic settlements, themed gardens, natural gardens, and a children’s garden. This combination of reconstructed settlements and gardens offers a different focus from Thallwitz’s castle history.
Water Power and Nature Along the Lossa
The Thallwitz sawmill has a history of water power spanning more than 200 years. It is still fully functional and has an overshot waterwheel. Every Whit Monday, the Thallwitz Local History Association holds its annual mill festival there. Check the specific event date before your trip.
Thallwitz Herrenteich is a dammed section of the Lossa. Its reeds and islands provide protected nesting sites for swans. West of Thallwitz lies Lauch, an extensive woodland divided into Oberlauch, Mittellauch, and Unterlauch. The Lossa flows through parts of this woodland. The local natural features thus have distinct characteristics: water, reeds, and islands define the scene at Herrenteich, while Lauch is characterized by woodland and the river course.
Cycling and Practical Information
The Mulde Valley Cycle Route runs from Wurzen to Eilenburg through the municipality of Thallwitz and also passes through the town of Thallwitz. Check route conditions before setting off. For refreshments, the Reußischer Hof inn and Café Höhne offer options in Thallwitz. A bakery and the Thallwitzer Landfleischerei butcher shop provide additional supplies for your journey. As visitor services can change, check the latest information about the businesses mentioned before your trip.
The Wider Landscape
In the Leipzig district, the Leipzig New Lakeland comprises 22 new lakes with a total water surface area of 70 km². In the eastern part of the district, the confluence of the Zwickauer and Freiberger Mulde rivers, along with green floodplains and forests, also shape the landscape. These broader landscape features complement local orientation in Thallwitz, which is defined by the Mulde, the Lossa, and the cultural sites mentioned above.
