Neusalza-Spremberg: Timber-framed houses, churches and cycling routes
Accommodation in Neusalza-Spremberg
Neusalza-Spremberg offers a range of ways to enjoy a trip: historic timber-framed architecture, churches, cycling routes, a 12.7-kilometre circular walk, and a forest and leisure pool. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether cultural history, outdoor excursions or water activities should take centre stage.
Timber-framed houses and churches with their own stories
The Reiterhaus is considered one of the oldest and most picturesque Upper Lusatian timber-framed buildings. The main building was constructed in 1670/71 and has had its present appearance since a renovation in 1703. A side wing dating from the first half of the 18th century contains an upper-floor timber-framed structure considered rare. In 1938, the Reiterhaus was entered on the state register of historic monuments as a monument of art and culture. The equestrian figure also has a historical connection: it is a trophy from the Ritterstechen, an old Upper Lusatian folk tradition.
The Church of the Holy Trinity stands above the market square. It was consecrated on 4 February 1679 and has a simple, three-part layout comprising the altar area, apse and nave. It is associated with the Exulanten, who came to Neusalza and its surroundings in the 18th century. The Spremberg village church stands on a hill above the Spree, next to Neusalza’s former Exulanten church; together, the two churches frame the town centre. During the expanded reconstruction in 1901/1902, the old tower and the former apse were preserved.
The historical dates also mark different points of reference: the founding of Neusalza was approved by the Saxon Elector on 12 January 1670, while Spremberg was first mentioned in a document in 1242. These accounts therefore tell of two different timelines, not a single founding event.
Explore on foot and by bike
A circular walk around Neusalza-Spremberg is 12.7 kilometres long and passes the Reiterhaus Museum, Spreepark and the Schmiedesteine rocks. From the terrace at the Schmiedesteine, you can enjoy views over the town and the Lusatian Highlands. Spreepark offers peace, quiet and seclusion; the local Kerbsohlental valley is considered a natural spectacle. The circular route can thus be combined with other scenic impressions of the area.
For cycling, other route details apply: Neusalza-Spremberg lies directly on the Umgebinde Cycle Route and the Spree Cycle Route, both long-distance cycling routes. While the circular walk is described as a route of a specific length, the two cycle routes provide a separate framework for planning excursions. Hiking trips from Neusalza-Spremberg to the Zittau Mountains can also be planned.
Forest and leisure pool
The forest and leisure pool is a modern outdoor swimming pool on a 30,000-square-metre site next to extensive woodland. Its leisure area features a large waterslide, a current channel, a waterfall and air bubblers. There is also a natural pool with a large water surface and diving tower, as well as a sports pool with 25-metre lanes. The pool therefore offers a range of different swimming and water areas, from the natural pool to the sports pool.
The site also has a campsite with a modern kitchen and communal room. As operations on site determine availability, check before your trip whether camping will be available during your stay. This lets you include it in your plans without treating the different bathing areas and the camping option as one and the same.
Getting to the Reiterhaus
The Reiterhaus is right on the B96, 200 metres before the town exit in the direction of Zittau. The “Reiterhaus” bus stop is in front of the building. Parking is available at the Reiterhaus and across the Spree at the Residenz am Spreepark. If you plan to travel by bus, check the latest connections before setting off; you can also check parking information and route details in advance.
Neusalza-Spremberg offers concrete starting points for planning your trip, from architectural and church history to a circular walk, long-distance cycle routes and an outdoor swimming pool. Consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay, and use that to guide your search for a hotel in Neusalza-Spremberg.
