Neugersdorf brings together themes that can carry different weight when choosing a travel destination: the history of the textile industry, distinctive buildings, theatre, an annual folk festival and paths into the great outdoors. If you are looking for a hotel in Neugersdorf, you can plan your stay around whichever aspect interests you most. The town’s architectural history ranges from the historic Stammhaus to the Baroque church and the Umgebinde house. For an event, you might consider the Jacobimarkt or the programme at the TheaterScheune; a short hike and the Volksbad add outdoor activities to the mix.

The Stammhaus and Architectural History

The Stammhaus in Neugersdorf has survived to this day. Carl Gottlieb Hoffmann acquired the building in 1833. The exhibition “From Home Weaver to Textile Manufacturer” is on display in the Stammhaus; the exhibition there covers Carl Gottlieb Hoffmann and the industrialisation of Upper Lusatia. The focus is thus on the history of the building and the development of an economically important regional industry. Special opening days are announced in advance. If you are planning a visit, check these announcements.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Neugersdorf is a Baroque building that was largely completed in 1738. Renovation and restoration work in 1872 gave its church tower its present form; it stands 64 metres high. Inside is an organ made almost 120 years ago by Dresden court organ builders Emil and Bruno Jehmlich. The LAUTEX Stammhaus offers a distinct architectural highlight of its own: it is an Umgebinde house dating from 1811, with substantial Umgebinde posts designed in the Baroque style.

The Bismarck Tower on Hutungsberg is a 19.5-metre-high observation tower. It was built in 1904 and inaugurated on 9 October that year. The Eiskeller on Hutung Neugersdorf offers a different kind of view: the park and viewing area affords vistas of the town and the surrounding Upper Lusatian countryside. Together, the tower and grounds offer contrasting experiences of architecture and landscaped open space.

Theatre and Jacobimarkt

The TheaterScheune Neugersdorf is a theatre space created from a dilapidated barn. The current events programme is published online, and tickets can be ordered through the TheaterScheune website. If attending the theatre is important to your stay, you can check the published programme in advance.

The Jacobimarkt is held annually as a folk festival and is the largest folk festival in the region. Its tradition dates back to 1728, when Prince Josef Wenzel von und zu Liechtenstein granted the shooting society the right to hold a market on the occasion of each king’s shooting competition. Today, the market combines fairground fun, regional culture, rides, specialities, attractions and a varied programme for the whole family. If you would like to travel to Neugersdorf for the Jacobimarkt, check the dates for the relevant year.

Hiking and Outdoor Activities

The Dreieckerweg runs through Neugersdorf Town Forest and is suitable for a short hike. Along the way, you can trace historic boundary lines in the region. The route thus combines woodland and regional history in a walking and hiking experience for anyone who wants to get outdoors while also noticing traces of former boundaries.

The Neugersdorf Volksbad is a large open-air swimming pool with a water area of 5,000 square metres for sports and recreation. In winter, it opens for ice sports, and skates are available to hire. These uses are clearly distinct: the water area is intended for sports and recreation, while in winter the pool provides space for ice sports. A short walk through the town forest and the Volksbad thus complement the town’s historical and cultural attractions with activities in nature and sport.
