For a trip to Eibau, the town’s architectural heritage and recurring traditions shape its character. The townscape is defined by the region’s typical Umgebinde houses and Faktoren houses, as well as elements of rural Baroque architecture. These are joined by the Baroque village church, Faktorenhof and events held each year on specific dates.

Village Church and Townscape

Eibau’s Baroque village church was consecrated in 1707 after four years of construction; the tower was completed in 1710. These two dates offer a glimpse into the building’s history. Anyone wishing to experience Eibau’s architecture along a route can follow the Schwarzbierweg. It begins on the Beckenberg in Eibau, passes through the town alongside noteworthy Umgebinde houses and Faktoren houses, and reaches the village church via Beckenbergstraße and Kirchstraße. This route description thus links the buildings in the townscape with a specific destination. As trail conditions can change, check them before your hike.

Faktorenhof and Historic Buildings

The restored Faktorenhof is considered one of the most valuable rural cultural monuments in Upper Lusatia. It is a Baroque three-sided farmstead dating from 1717, with a manor house, barn and stable. Its museum brings more than 660 years of Eibau’s history and the town’s distinctive features to life. Another historic building in Eibau, Faktorei 312, is a historically significant Faktoren house and cultural monument dating from 1703. The different names also refer to different types of buildings: Faktorei 312 is a Faktoren house, while Faktorenhof is a three-sided farmstead. Together with the Umgebinde houses, buildings like these shape the town’s architectural character.

Recurring Events

The International Chainsaw Carving Festival takes place every year on the Eibau Beckenberg over the Ascension Day weekend. From Ascension Thursday to Sunday, it features daily chainsaw carving demonstrations, a market with regional traders and craftspeople, and a varied supporting programme. The Eibau Beer and Traditions Parade has been held every year since 1993 on the last Sunday in June. Horses pull festival wagons with teams of two, four and, in some cases, even six horses. The wagons depict historical scenes from the history of Upper Lusatia and beer production. The two festivals differ in timing and character: the Beckenberg event features carving demonstrations and a market, while the horse-drawn festival wagons take centre stage in the Traditions Parade. Check the dates for the year of your trip; event programme details may change.

Cycling Tours and Bread Baking

Faktorei 312 offers guided cycling tours through Upper Lusatia on roads with almost no car traffic. It also offers bread-baking sessions in a wood-fired oven by appointment, ideally for groups of four to eight people. This gives you two different activities to choose from: the cycling tours follow roads with almost no car traffic through Upper Lusatia, while the bread-baking experience includes the wood-fired oven and requires an advance appointment. If you are planning a group activity, the stated ideal group size is a useful guide.

Hiking Area on the Kottmar

As a complement to the routes through Eibau, the 583-metre-high Kottmar lies nearby. Eibau residents call it their local mountain. It has a hiking area with well-marked trails and viewpoints in all four cardinal directions. The Schwarzbierweg passes Eibau’s houses and leads to the village church; the Kottmar offers a hiking area with viewpoints. You can thus consider the town’s architectural heritage and the surrounding hiking trails as different focal points for your stay.
