Großröhrsdorf: Ribbon-Weaving History and Trails
Accommodation in Großröhrsdorf
Großröhrsdorf lies on the Große Röder and is the center of historic ribbon weaving in the Röder Valley. For your trip planning, the town offers a clear cultural focus: the development of ribbon weaving can be traced through its long tradition, museum collections and historic buildings. The Massenei outdoor pool and trails for hiking and cycling round out the attractions.
Ribbon Weaving and the Town’s History
Ribbon weaving has a tradition of more than 320 years in Großröhrsdorf, dating back to its introduction in 1680. By the mid-19th century, the town had developed into an important production center: at the time, it had 32 ribbon factories and more than 1,000 looms. Bandweberei F.A. Schurig was founded in 1863 as a small business that employed home weavers.
The town hall also reflects the town’s architectural history. Construction began with the laying of the foundation stone on May 27, 1908; the building was inaugurated the following year.
Museums and Historic Sites
The Kulturfabrik is a former ribbon-weaving mill in the town center and now houses the Technical Museum of Ribbon Weaving. Historic looms are on display there. Many are still operational and are demonstrated during guided tours. If you are interested in the craft, the museum offers not only exhibits but also an insight into working with the machines.
The local history museum is housed in Großröhrsdorf’s oldest surviving timber-framed house, built in 1798. The exhibition depicts the lives of the first ribbon weavers in historic weavers’ and farmers’ rooms and in an old shop. It also covers local crafts: shoemaking, cigar making, furriery and blacksmithing. The Black Kitchen contains Lusatia’s last surviving smoke outlet chimney.
Massenei Outdoor Pool and Trails Through the Massenei
The Massenei outdoor pool is located in the Massenei forest and combines swimming with a woodland setting. The water area covers more than 2,400 square meters; the stainless-steel pools are heated with solar energy. Facilities include four 50-meter competition lanes, a diving pit and diving platforms at 1, 3 and 5 meters. Two large water slides are 61 and 66 meters long; there is also a wide water slide. Large lawns, a children’s playground and a dedicated parent-and-child area complete the facilities.
The 7.6-kilometer Sagenpfad (Legends Trail) in the Massenei is suitable for cycling and walking. Benches and ten story panels line the route. The longer Massenei circular trail, about 13 kilometers long, links urban and natural areas of Großröhrsdorf.
The Kleinröhrsdorf circular hiking trail is a leisurely day trip in Kleinröhrsdorf, a district of Großröhrsdorf. The circular trail near Hauswalde passes over the Krohnenberg, Kesselberg and Thunigsberg and connects with the hiking trail network of Rammenau and the Buschmühle natural swimming area. For a cycling trip, the Westlausitz section of the Röder Cycle Route is another option: it is around 30 kilometers long and considered easy, with no significant climbs.
The 62-kilometer Produktroute (Product Route) passes the Technical Museum of Ribbon Weaving. It links craft businesses and demonstration workshops with regional products and offers opportunities to visit direct sellers and retail outlets for regional produce. Conditions and assessments for the Röder Cycle Route may change; check the latest information before setting out. If you would like to visit stops along the Product Route, check the visitor arrangements at each business in advance.
