Neschwitz Castle and Park
Neschwitz Castle and Park form a historic ensemble. The Old Castle was built between 1721 and 1723; the Blue Gate dates from before 1800. The ensemble also includes a historic obelisk and the hunting pavilion, built during the same period as the castle. Two reference points help establish the chronology: the hunting pavilion dates from the castle’s construction period, while the Blue Gate, built before 1800, provides a separate point of reference.
Local History Museum and Milling Technology
The Neschwitz Local History Museum offers an insight into the town’s history. It is regularly open on Sundays and public holidays; visits can also be arranged by appointment. Check the opening arrangements in advance if you are planning a museum visit. In the district of Luga stands a nearly 300-year-old post mill. Guided visits explain traditional milling and demonstrate historic mill technology. The availability of guided tours may vary; check in advance if you are including the mill in your travel plans. The museum and mill offer different areas of focus: local history on the one hand, and traditional milling and historic mill technology on the other.
Cycling Routes and Culture in the Bautzen District
The wider destination of the Bautzen district also offers cycling routes and the cultural tradition of Upper Lusatian carnival. The Bautzen North Tour is a 43.1-kilometre cycle route from Bautzen via Quatitz, Großdubrau, Milkel, Klix and Malschwitz, returning to Bautzen. It passes through the heath and pond landscape and along the nature trail in Crosta.
The Hills and Valleys Route is a regional circular route through the West Lusatian Hills in the Bautzen district. The Krabat Cycle Route is also a regional circular route in the Bautzen district, following in the footsteps of Krabat, the Sorbian legendary hero. The two tours can be distinguished by their named focus: the West Lusatian Hills for the Hills and Valleys Route, and the figure of Krabat for the Krabat Cycle Route.
The Central Germany Route is a long-distance cycle route from Zittau to Aachen; one section runs through the Upper Lusatian Highlands in the Bautzen district. The Spree Cycle Route runs from its source in Upper Lusatia to Berlin; the section from Taubenheim to Zerre lies in the Bautzen district. In both cases, the overall route’s endpoints are mentioned alongside a specific section in the district. Upper Lusatian carnival is also part of the cultural tradition of the Bautzen district; its strongholds are the towns of Schirgiswalde and Wittichenau.
When choosing a route, circular tours and long-distance routes provide two different points of reference: the Bautzen North Tour, the Hills and Valleys Route and the Krabat Cycle Route are circular tours; the Central Germany Route is a long-distance cycle route. For the Spree Cycle Route, its source in Upper Lusatia and Berlin mark the overall route.
When looking for a hotel in Neschwitz, you can therefore first consider whether your focus is on the historic ensemble, local history and milling technology, or also on cycling and cultural themes in the Bautzen district.
