Schlettau combines castle history, Ore Mountains craftsmanship and a 15.53-kilometre circular hike. Schlettau Castle is a practical starting point for planning cultural visits and hikes: the route starts and ends here, and the castle complex offers several distinct exhibition themes. Nearby, you can also find a display of traditional craftsmanship and a church that can only be visited by prior arrangement.

Schlettau Castle: Building History and Exhibitions

Schlettau Castle is a listed castle complex dating from the 14th century. The complex includes a manor house, farm buildings and a landscaped park. Its architecture features elements of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-Gothic styles. The castle’s history therefore cannot be reduced to a single period: several eras have shaped the appearance of the complex.

The permanent visitor offerings include an exhibition on the castle’s history, the Erzgebirge Landscape Art Gallery, a forest and wildlife history centre, and a demonstration workshop for passementerie. Readings, theatre performances and concerts are held in the Knights’ Hall; the programme may vary. When planning your visit, it is therefore helpful to distinguish between the permanent exhibition areas and individual events.

Crafts and Church Art

Near the castle, the “Glück auf” Schnitzerheim showcases traditional woodcarving and bobbin lace. Exhibits include mechanical Christmas mountain displays, historic pyramids and carvings made by members. This presentation complements the castle exhibitions with a distinct perspective on Ore Mountains craft traditions.

The Gothic St. Ulrich’s Church is associated with what is locally known as the “church face.” Visits must be arranged in advance. If you would like to include the church in your cultural itinerary, take this condition into account when arranging a time.

Hiking Around Schlettau

The “Around Schlettau” circular trail starts and ends at Schlettau Castle and is 15.53 kilometres long. Its route follows the Zschopau Valley Trail, a forest path towards Scheibenberg, a basalt nature trail and the Ottomar Zahm Trail. Along the way, there are views of the Ore Mountains. The route brings together several named trails and nature paths in a circular walk that starts and ends at the castle.

Schlossparkplatz/Naumannplatz and bus access are listed as travel options for the hike. Check the current timetable before setting out. As trail conditions can change, it is also a good idea to check the route conditions before your hike.

Erzgebirgskreis: A Regional Framework for Culture and Hiking

The Erzgebirgskreis has a signposted network of hiking trails spanning around 4,500 kilometres. This provides a regional framework for planning excursions; the “Around Schlettau” route remains a separate, specifically described hiking option at 15.53 kilometres.

The cultural themes of the Erzgebirgskreis extend beyond Schlettau. The Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2019. Seiffen is considered the birthplace of Ore Mountain folk art. The Seiffen Open-Air Museum of the Ore Mountains showcases historic buildings and workshops from the 19th and early 20th centuries. At its centre is the original Preißler turning workshop, preserved with its water-powered drive. These regional examples complement the picture of Schlettau’s castle and crafts, but are not part of the town’s own attractions.
